UpdatedIs there a problem with weight gain taking neurotin? Also, I was told it is not a safe drug and has had several lawsuits.

My Husband has been on this drug for over 6 years he is having so many problems that the doctors are baffeled, he has gained over 40 lbs. of fluid and has the hot spells you were reffering to and also he had a bad spell of depression that I never thought was going to end, as someone mentioned before these drug reps should not be allowed to tell the drs. that this drug can treat any other symptoms other than the one it was approved for!!! PERIOD!!!! Good Luck to all !!!
I am on Gralise, the extended release version of Neurontin and I find myself to be hungry less often and eating out of habit more than anything else. I have been on 900 mg and have already lost 3 pounds. There has been no water retention or swelling as yet. I do exercise frequently however so that may play a role in that in addition to regularly skipping meals because of the aforementioned lack of hunger. According to the drug information sheet gralise caused weight gain in 1.5% of people vs. .6% for placebo and if you have diabetes you are more likely to experience the fluid retention. This is only for gralise though so I don't really know about straight Neurontin. The only downside for me has been a few days of gastrointestinal problems but that seems t have gone away.
You are for sure going to gain weight and NEVER feel full on it. Lyrica and gabitril are just the same also you will feel HOT like you are going to catch a fire. ONE NASTY MEDICATION
I've taken both medications. The Neurotin didn't help at all but I've been on the Lycria for several months now. I've had minor weight gain but have never felt like I was going to catch on fire or even a hot flash. Both of these med's have been used for years. The best thing to do is speak with your doctor.
The effects of drugs vary from person to person, there is no way of knowing if it will cause side effects or weight gain for you, unless you actually try it.
No two people are the same, thus their bodies react differently to medications.
Has anyone that has taken Neurotin ever suffered severe memory loss and problems with short term memory
I was on Neurontin for two months for nerve issues for my lumbar area. It didn't do too much to help with my problem but I put on about 20 pounds. I explained to my doc that since it really wasn't helping and I had put on the weight, I'd like to be taken off - which he did. Now, on to weight loss. I noticed it was around my lower abs/hip area (seemed confined). Hopefully it comes off easily.
I noticed in your comments feed that one advised you speak with your dr regarding any questions with this medication. As a pharmacy tech who worked with an excellent pharmacist in vegas, I know that the pharmacist take many more years in medictions that the dr's do. Unfortunately with new drugs coming out yearly alot of drug reps take samples and literature to the dr's office, tell them what the drug is for and advises they give them to pts. This is all good, HOWEVER, I have to wonder sometimes (with everything I have seen in the pharmacy), how many dr's really read all this literature. Bottom line: When it comes to medications your best bet it to speak with your pharmacist. Also if you take several medications, it is best to have your prescriptions filled at the same pharmacy so that they will be allerted immediately if there is any type of drug interation between what you have been taking and what you have just been given. Medications are very tricky and you have to really know what you have and what it will do for you and seeing scripts in the past that would actually kill a patient if the pharmacist gave all the meds the dr wrote for, makes me a down right true believer in communication with your pharmacist. He/She can be your best friend in times like these. Of course you need to have one heck of a pharmacist. I had one one of the best I had ever seen when I worked in Vegas. To this day, 10 years after moving away, I will always call him with my questions. Main Reason: I trust him because I have seen him at work. So my last recommendation is get to know your pharmacist and find one you are just as comfortable with as you would your primary doctor. Good luck to you
I've been on Neurontin for 1 yr at 1800 mg/day for severe neuropathy following trauma to my radial and median nerves (totally severed then surgically re-connected). I have had no side effects at all following the initial adjustment when I would wake up in the morning with numbness and tingling in my hands and feet.
I weigh not one pound more than I did a year ago. So, I don't doubt that some people have weight gain, and other side effects, they just didn't happen to me.
I'm just posting this so folks will know that these side effects are not universal, and this drug can really help. I think I would have cut off my own hand if I hadn't found this drug. The opiates could not control the pain at all. Neurontin ended it almost completely.
I have been on neurontin for over a year and now having problem with my short term memory that effects my job performance I have also tried lyrica that keep me sluggiest about half the day I ALSO EXPERIENCE WEIGHT GAIN with both drugs have dicuss my concern with my doc.I have nerve damage c4,c5 had surgery for a rupture disc in my neck constant r- shoulder, arm and tingling in my upper right leg so either I deal with the pain or side affect of thease meds what agirl to do?
