Viibryd Hair Loss
UpdatedAfter discontinuing Viibryd, has anyone noticed their hair NOT becoming thick again? I've been on 60 mg for about 8 months. My hair is now falling out by the handfuls.. I have an appointment to see my dr. next week but I'm terrified my hair won't grow back! Not to sound self centered or shallow but I adore my hair! Had I of known this was a side effect I'd never agreed to try this medication. I'm terrified, as I've already stated, but I am also angry that this information isn't given by drug reps who push these meds! I pay 277$ a month for this RX & now have to worry about withdrawals, my hair possibly not growing back & adjusting to a new medication. Any replies are welcome & will be appreciated!
Hello, Amanda! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having.
However, I'm not finding anything listing this as a side effect of Viibryd, but there is no way to know how any given medication will affect any given person that tries it. How long have you been taking it?
Are you taking anything else, such as hormonal contraceptives? How old are you?
Hair loss in women is frequently caused by hormonal imbalance.
Hi Amanda, yes I noticed that two months after I started to take Viibryd I was shedding a lot of hair? I also gained about 10 pounds. I was only taking 20mg as it made me quote nauseated. After going back on Wellbutrin my hair has started to grow back. I need to work on the 10 pounds!
I was on viibryd for about 6 months, taking 20 milligrams a day. I have long beautiful blonde hair and it started coming out by the handfuls. I told my doctor and he was shocked because it's not listed by the manufacturer as a side effect. I told him I googled viibryd hair loss and saw many people's stories of hair loss. He took out his phone and googled the same thing. He was shocked and told me to stop taking it immediately and he prescribed me a new medication on the market called fetzima. It's only been a week since I stopped viibryd and there's less hair falling out, but it's still not back to normal yet. I wish they had listed this in the viibryd brochure because I would have never taken it if I had known.
Amanda, I discontinued Vibryd in February and my hair is growing back slowly. I only wish I had connected the dots on this earlier. I have tried many antidepressants and this is the only one that has caused hair loss like this for me. I told my doc and she had not heard this. I think there would be more reports if more people could afford to take Vibryd. My doc says many of her patients can't afford it.
I experienced scary hair shedding 3 mo after trying viibryd . Im
Foing to have to have to cut my hair. It also instantly caused insomnia that hasn't gone away and I stopped using it months ago. Has your hair loss stop and did it begin to thicken up yet?
Verwon, read the question again, she is taking it for the last 8 months , what part didnt you understand before answering with a very strange response. You need to be careful when responding to medical question and not offer your opinion just for the sake of offering an opinion
To those with hair loss, I can totally relate, though my hair all fell out due to traumatic shock and surgery, after many yrs of slow or no growth I started taking biotin 10,000 mls and zinc 50 mg daily and I could almost measure the growth monthly, hair now past my bum, almost to my knees, , no adverse side effects, you might want to try this combo, ok thx, lizzy
George. Agreed the duration of medication was listed in the post but there is really no reason to be rude, which in turn diminishes your credibility. These postings are meant to be supportive and helpful. In fact, the comments made by Verwon were valid and potentially very helpful in that it is difficult to nail down cause and effect - especially when there may be co-morbidities ( additional causes) such as hormone treatment or hormone replacement therapy, or hormone insufficiency. Hormone related hair loss (also known as effluvium) is not opinion but fact. Since hair loss is not listed as an established side effect of Viibryd it is entirely reasonable to look for different or additional potential causes before incriminating the Viibryd alone, which may cause someone to discontinue a medication that may otherwise be very beneficial. A cautious approach should be taken before discontinuing a medication prescribed for depression or mood stabilization since abrupt cessation can cause much more severe consequences than hair loss. The good news, should hair loss be associated with medication, is that stopping the medication will almost always result in return of normal hair growth, but this process can take time. Response to hair growth cycles and their changes are often delayed. After stopping a medication, hair may continue to fall out for some weeks before obvious regrowth occurs. For those that suggest vitamins and supplements, these can be very helpful especially if taken according to directions. Let's look to be thoughtful, methodical and respectful especially when considering that Viibryd and other anti-depressants are taken by those who need our support!
Just started and found this the only posting about hair loss. I noticed more hair loss than before having been on 10Mg for only 5 days.
Could not find any official list of side effects
Listing hair loss. Of course it's a cover up!

I took Viibryd 20 mg for about 6 months. My hair is TERRIBLE now. It is the only thing I changed. I have little doubt when I say, it was the antidepressant that caused this to happen.
Amanda Since I've been on it my hair is falling out by handfuls, breaking off, lost its luster & looks like crap. I have long hair to my waste. It's so thin now you can see hints of my scalp & a child's hair band is to big to do a pony tail! I also get flare ups on my scalp. Big flesh colored bumps that cause lots of pain, so bad that it hurts to even touch my scalp. The doctor wouldn't liste, acted like no big deal & kept me on it. Went to different doctor yesterday, he immediately took me off it & said he is not a big fan of Viibryd. It also has so much Seratoin in it it massively affected my small bowl. New Dr treating me for that too. Possible permanent hair loss, time will tell. Im scared.
I just started Viibryd as well and noticed much hair loss especially in the front. Now that I see others have had the same thing happen. I am calling my physician and going back to zoloft. this is scary
I have been taking Viibryd for a couple months and have also noticed significant hair loss. This is the only different drug I've been taking so the cause and effect seems pretty obvious. I have ordered a hair growth supplement and may try that before I quit Viibryd. Anybody have any thoughts about stopping the hair loss with a hair supplement?
Tons of hair loss and not growing back. I'm going bald around my forehead.
I also am experiencing hair loss with viibryd. I have always had thick blonde hair, but have taken viibryd for only 4months and I can see my scalp my hair is so thin! This med works for my depression but gives me hypomania. I do not have Thyroid problems. Recently I have started high dose liquid vitamins from Costco, I hope this makes a huge difference or I will have to stop taking viibryd. I'm so upset because this med has helped me so much and I've tried them all. I have started on projects that I had lost total interest in for 20 years.
Just as an aside, upon researching Viibryd, it does not list hair loss as a side effect. However, Viibryd in addition to affecting the reputable of serotonin, does affect another site in the brain in the same manner as the anti-anxiety drug Buspar, thus giving Viibryd an anti-anxiety effect. If you look at the side effects of Buspar, you will notice that one of its side effects is hair loss.
I've been on Viibryd for 3 years. My hair over the last year or so has been falling out by the handful. I was so scared after reading other people's accounts of the same thing happening that I've been tapering over the last 9ish months. I've seen a decrease in the amount of hair loss but my hair is still very thin.
Re: Terry (# 13)
I started back on Viibryd and have been back on it for about five weeks. I lost a lot of hair on my frontal scalp when I first started taking Viibryd but now the hair loss appears to have stopped. I will continue to take this antidepressant for awhile longer because my mood seems to be better. If I can keep on an even keel, I may tostick with it.
My hair is thin and falling out too . This is my first month
Re: Carla (# 19)
This medicine has helped me so much but I don't want to be bald . I'm 47 and my eye lashes , eyebrows snd hair the thinnest ever . I take 10,000 mg of biotin and zinc daily before and when I started viibryd . Not helping . I'm going to stop taking and try something else . I hope my hair grows back . I also gave big bumps in my scalp . Anyone know if my hair will come back in ??

Hi, I had this experience with Wellbutrin and realized it just a couple of beers before my best friend's wedding which I was a brides maid and I was mortified that my hair seemed to just melt off of my scalp when brushed or gently tugged. I had several bald spots and thin hair all over my scalp. I stopped the med and started products and worked on it. Daily to get out filled in enough. I had hair loss before in my 20's and it took 6 years to regrow but once I figured out how. Now Dr wants me on vibryd. I would rather be the messed up person I am than be BALD. I don't care what anyone says, they all have the non listed side effect of hair loss. I've tried a few and& they all immediately cause hair loss. Look up alopecia as a possible side effect. To regrow hair use organic castor oil regularly. I even sleep in it you can combo it with organic coconut oil to make it a little more thin and pliable to the scalp. Take palmetto supplements everyday.
I lost a ton of hair on Zoloft. My Doc took me off it. Hoping that Viibryd will not continue to take out my hair and work as a great antidepressant.

Wow, I am very relieved to see this site discussing hair loss combined with Viibryd. I’ve been literally trying to figure this out for some time now...I’m a 40 year old male that had very very minor hair thinning and it seemed like over the last 2 years that I’ve been on viibryd im losing my hair at a very fast pace. It’s alarming, it’s a shame because this med has definitely helped me to deal with very severe post concussion syndrome. Fast forward to 3 - 4 months ago I started using rogaine because hair loss IS NOT LISTED AS A SIDE EFFECT! It did help a little bit not much and now I’m only on 10 mgs (I used to take 40 mgs but very slowly tapered). When I started to go down to 5 mgs I noticed my migraines were getting out of control. Not sure why it’s triggering migraines once I get down to such a low dose. Maybe because I’ve been taking it for years?

I finally decided to quit Viibryd and go back to Paxil a number of months ago. I experienced hair loss at first on Viibryd but it finally stopped. Viibryd was also giving me panic attacks every once in awhile. After going back on Paxil, which I never have experienced hair loss while taking, none of the hair I I lost on Viibryd came back. I am now on Zoloft and I’m feeling great.
Re: Greg (# 21)
I took Viibryd for about eight months and lost quite a bit of my frontal hair. I have been back on Paxil for four months and the hair I lost has not come back.
I’m not joking. My hair is awful. It has to be from this medication. Two months after I started taking it my hair started to fall out. I need to ween off of it. How long does it take ?
Well, now for my latest installment on Viibryd. I continued taking Viibryd for about six months. At times I welcomed the good feelings I got from having the drug in my system. After awhile I started experiencing severe anxiety, sometimes panic attracts,. The pill was becoming way too activating for my system and I knew for my mental health I had to stop taking it. I had been taking Paxil 40 for years and felt I needed to go back on it again. I was much worried about the weaning off period from Viibryd. The first day I went from taking 40 Viibryd to 20 Viibryd and 20 Paxil. Since I didn’t feel that I was experiencing great withdraw symptoms from stopping Viibryd, the second day I just took 40 Paxil and did not take any Viibryd. I continued taking 49 Paxil and 0 Viibryd from then on. The only withdrawal symptoms from Viibryd were slight headache and a little tingling sensations. It has now been about five days off Viibryd and taking 40 Paxil. No more high anxiety or panic attacks. I’m back to feeling fantastic again. Paxil has been my wonder drug for years and I’m glad to be back on it. Viibryd caused me to experience har loss on the frontal scalp at first but it seemed to subside after awhile. Those afraid of bad withdraw symptoms coming off Viibryd I hope will learn from my withdraw symptoms. Maybe by going right back on Paxil helped me. Viibryd is a great drug for some but it was not that great for me. Glad to be free of panic attacks and high anxiety.
I haven't noticed anything going on with my hair, but my nails have become ridiculously thin. They're so bad that they bend backward when I'm moving clothes from the washer to the dryer--just the amount of pressure becomes painful. I've been on Viibryd for about 9 months. Anyone experience the same or notice a difference with your nails in addition to your hair?
My hair is falling out by the hand full my hair was long n lush and so thick and now you can see a huge bald spot in the front on my forehead . My hair is dark and you can see my scalp on both sides in the front ! it has gotten so bad I am afraid to even brush or wash my hair now every other day Pleas help xo this is making my depression so much worse that I am starting to look so bad. Vibryd 20 mg -13 mo
Re: carol (# 12)
I made the doctor take me off. My hair was falling out like crazy but doctor kept telling me to stay on it and didn't flinch when I showed him my handfuls of hair. All I had to do was run my hand through my hair to show him a handful. My hair is NOT growing back!!! So thin can't even hold a simple hair tie!
