It could be due to a hormonal imbalance, but it can't be said with any certainty from just the information in your post.
When you did get your period, did you experience any PMS symptoms, such as anxiety, irritability and/or food cravings? Did you have any cramping? How long did it usually last and how heavy was the flow?
Have you consulted your doctor? They'd be able to do some blood work and an exam to find out what's going on.
When was your last pap smear?
