The Medicine Save The Baby (Page 2)
UpdatedIs the formula for Lee's Save the Baby (liquid in the glass bottle NOT the rub on salve) patent protected, does anyone know how to obtain the formula
Laura, I would be interested in buying the bottle from you if you have sold it already.
Save the Baby when we had it was in a small bottle in liquid form. Our mother would give it to us with a teaspoon of sugar and put a couple of drops of Save the baby on it. Plus she rubbed our chest and backs with it. Nobody in our family died from ingesting it and I could use some now when bronchitis hits or the flu. The only reason you can't find it like you use to is because it was eating at the governments money because we was using those old folk remedies and they were working better than the doctors were. That's why you can't find many remedies because they don't want you to find them, because it might put them out of business.
I still use it and I do get it from that same website. I love the stuff.
I am doing some historical research about an Adirondack guide who knew Dr. William Lee and told a very funny story about Dr. Lee's daughter Iona. Could you briefly summarize Dr. Lee's time in North Creek? I understand he practiced medicine there during 1910-16, until he fell ill (what illness?) and then became county health official. Is that correct? Anything else you can tell me about him, either his personality or his work? What exactly did Dr. Lee do as a county health official? Finally, do you know of any sources where I could find further information about him? Thanks, and good luck with your own practice.
Save the baby did originate in North creek, NY but was produced in Watervilliet, NY. I lived next door to the building where it was made amd when they cooked it, the whole neighborhood smelled of camphor. The woman who owned the company was my "aunt" and my grand mother her secretary. Save The Baby was a wonderfulroduct and has seen it's sidevof pressure from big Pharm in it's attempt to remove this powerful product from the market. Chest colds, no problem. The patent was sold to a company in Canada after her death in the late seventies.
YAY! other ppl besides me know what Save the Baby is!!! i'm 38 & remember when i was sick, my granny would pour some on a rag, warm the rag over a kettle of boiling water or just open stove flame, then pin the rag to the inside of my jammies. the warmth & the smell remind me of her. i also remember that it also felt gritty, like there was sand in it or something. anyone else remember that part? would love to get my hands on some these days!!
You can buy Save the Baby at elydrugs medical supply in KY and they offer free shipping.
Well lets just say the rest of the ingredients are no longer legal....
My mother passed away in December. She grew up in Troy, NY. When we were little, Save the Baby was the 'go to' medicine when you had a cough. I found 2 partly used bottles in her medicine chest. Both of them are in a box with an illustration of a woman. Interested?
My mother grew up in Troy NY. She passed away in December at age 86. In her medicine cabinet I found 2 partly used bottles of Save the Baby. Both are in boxes. One has the set of directions. Interested?

Mrs S,
Do you still have the box of Save a Baby, the one with directions?
I grew up in Hoosick Falls NY and I believe Save The Baby was manufactured in a garage style building at the foot of High St in Hoosick Falls.
I am trying to find a bottle of liquid save the baby. Does anyone know where to get the liquid form?
I remember taking the bottle to college with me in 1971 just in case I needed it and sure enough, when I got chest congestion, it saved me from going to the doctor or missing classes. I just rubbed it on my chest and it did the trick. I so wish I had the recipe as I would make it for my family now. If anyone finds the recipe or can take their bottle for analysis, we would all appreciate it.
The Original save the baby had balsam, camphor, rosemary, oregano, and petrolatum. Camphor can be toxic because while it may not kill you it can ulcerate the stomach. My mother used a mixture aloe of juice balsam,Licorice root, rosemary, oregano, Sage, licorice and mullein flowers. She would make a reduction of everything but the aloe. Strain it out and add it to twice the amount of Aloe juice. Shake very well before use. Two tblspoons with sugar or honey. I am from Maine and as a child I experienced both my family's recipe as well as Save the Baby. They both taste awful and work equally well. I am now an adult as well as a practicing Herbalist and honestly, the risks of orally ingesting camphor outway the benefits. If you feel that camphor needs to be present I recommend that you get the STB chest rub and use it in conjunction with an oral remedy.
Brian, I just came upon these posts. I, too, have two remaining bottles of Save the Baby and have tried for years to find out if it is still being made in the liquid form. Do you know the name of the company the formula was sold to in Canada and would you happen to know if they still make the liquid form. We never took it orally, but it was wonderful rubbed on our chests and a little bit put under our noses and on our pillowcase. Thank you.
Sorry for your lost. Do you still have the Dave the baby medicine?
