Tapering Off Of Topamax

Everything I've read has said to taper off of Topamax at 25mg. increments weekly. I'm on 200mg. My doctor told me to decrease by 100mg. every two weeks, that will be fine. However, after everything I've read I'm really nervous tapering at such a high dose. I would really appreciate any advice anyone could offer me on this matter. Thanks so much!

Hello, Kelly! How are you?

You are right to be concerned, stopping it too fast can create the risk of seizures, even in people that have never had seizures in the past and who do not have epilepsy, as warned by the FDA.

The recommendation from the NIH is that it be tapered and yes, it's usually done by lowering 25mgs a week.

Thanks so much Verwon, I really appreciate it! I do have one more question if you could help me understand it, I would be very appreciative as well. Although I didn't go on Topamax to lose weight, that was the only good thing that came out of it. Why do people gain weight when they go off if it? I know your appetite returns but if you are careful not to eat junk and overeat will you still gain weight? 10 lbs. ok but is it going to be out of my control and I'll just start packing on the lbs.? :-( Diabetes runs in my family so I really have to watch my weight!
