Sulfamethoxazole Trimethoprim Dosage

I have the 800mg/160mg pills and want to cut them up to give to a dog with a UTI but I am unsure which mg dose I use to figure out how much to give to a 10# dog. Other web sites say 13mg per lb every 24hrs for dogs which would be 130mg a day, is that based on the 800mg of Sulfa. or the 160mg of the Trip?

The following dosing guidelines relating to Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim DS (800/160) are from a pet med store and is not intended to be taken as professional medical advice. However it may help provide beneficial insight as to what may be appropriate:

*13mg per pound of pet's body weight by mouth every 24 hours
*May be divided into two doses given 12 hours apart

Generally it would be best to discuss proper dosing protocols with a licensed veterinarian in person, primarily so they can make the most informed treatment decision. Vets take several factors into consideration before recommending any particular form of treatment, let alone how much of it to administer and how frequently that amount should be taken. The dose and duration of treatment may very well depend upon the type of infection and how well the dog responds to Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim (re: side effects, etc).
