Stopping Furosemide

Hi, I'm from the UK. My 78yr old mum has been prescribed 120mg furosemide daily for heart failure, but the side effects are dreadful and two days ago she decided to stop taking them. She has been on them for 9 months and I don't think it is wise for her to stop them suddenly. Is she putting herself at risk by doing this? Thank you

Hello, Cate! How is your mum doing?

Yes, she could certainly be putting herself at risk. Congestive heart failure is caused by high blood pressure, which causes the body to retain too much fluid. The intent of this medication is to help remove that excess fluid, to reduce the strain on her heart, so it can function better and more easily, thus, if she stops taking it suddenly, she could experience elevated blood pressure, elevated heart rate and, go into full heart failure, any of which could possibly be fatal, if they get out of hand.

What side effects is she experiencing? The U.S. FDA lists the typical ones for this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and hypotension.

Maybe the issues that are causing her problems can be addressed to help her more.
