I have been treated with hydrocodone for the past 16 years and now my doctor wants to refer me to a pain clinic. I have 3 herniated discs in my neck I've rheumatoid arthritis I have very bad anxiety that sometimes won't let me leave the house I have depression. My mother has spondylosis and are symptoms are very similar. I am unable to work because I cannot stand or sit for long periods of time. I have joint pain and swelling in my hands and feet. I have a lot of stress in my life. I may get about 2 to 3 hours of sleep off and on through the night. I have gastropraesis and DDD. I'm so emotional that I can't make it through a day without having a meltdown. I have no idea what to expect from a pain clinic and change scares me. My current meds are not working because I've become immune to them. And I've asked my Dr for 4 years to try something different but he just changes the subject.i feel I'm the ideal patient for I follow his instructions to the tee as well as taking my meds. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

The DEA discourages general practice doctors from prescribing stronger opiates, it is now preferred that it be done by a specialist in pain management who can better monitor patients and their use of them. I've not been to one, so I can't say what all you should expect, but many do want you to try non-narcotic treatment options, before resorting to prescribing medications.
The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
As to the mood issue, have you tried anything to help that?
Can anyone in pain management post about their experience?
