All prescription tablets in the U.S. have markings on them, to enable their identification, in case of emergency. Thus, if it has no markings, it is most likely something available over the counter, which would include vitamins.
The best thing to do, in my opinion, would be to dispose of it and just have a talk with him about the dangers of drug abuse and the risks of taking something given to him by someone else.
