UpdatedSide affects of being on gabapentin...off it 2 weeks now and have alot of really bad stuff going on..docs not helping me much at all...at my wits end now..anyone help?think this is gonna be a difficult one?but any info regarding the way i am feeling would be great please!
I quit taking the gabapentin almost 2 weeks ago!! I could have been the one writing your post!!! Help!!! I'm miserable too!!!
Hi...are you having any side affects?mine was abruptly stopped by my stupid doc half way through tapering off that crap,im not any better and has left me with the worst side affects (hopefully not permanent)pain worse than ever, thats the easiest bit..the other stuffs a nightmare.hope your coping?be good to know how your feeling?!
One thing I'd like to remind everyone of is that no matter what your doctor prescribes and why, you are under no obligation to take it. If something is making you that miserable, stop taking it and contact your doctor ASAP.
Unless, of course, it is a life-sustaining medication, such as something for a heart condition that you can't stop.
How are you all feeling, now?
Hi thanks for responding,i'm much worse and thats nearly 5 weeks of gabapentin,so much so i had to take a trip down to my nearest hospital as i was choking with a sticky larynx and had no moisture in my mouth at all,my eyes were like so sticky like glue and my mouth was like gravel rubber and plastic, much more,my pain has been worse than ever, cant eat or sleep and sweats all night long, they just said go back to my docs on monday but to be honest their not helping me at all,my life is so misersble and i know gabapentin started this but docs are ignoring this,im not coping at all and know i shouldnt be feeling like this, think its all to much for me and the doctors,at a complete loss now, hope your well..kia
I took gabbapentin to get of alcohol relapsed after 16 year , knew was getting addicted to gabbapentin after 10 or more days had to stop them, so i took a lot of codeine and gradually came of gabs halving them but codeine helped if you can get it strong , then its easier weaning of codeine than gab, i was in Thailand at the time this happened nightmare but did it.ps excuse my grammar dyslexic.
My mother (85) was prescribed Gabapentin for loss of feeling in her feet. She had a double knee replacement about 4 months ago but had the tingling in her feet before that. However it got steadily worse and after taking the Gabapentin for 2 months she now has very little feeling from her knees down and is looking at ending up in a wheelchair. Her doctor has taken her off the Gabapentin - halved the does for one week and now completely stopped. She is now feeling very depressed and the loss of feeling just gets worse. Neither her surgeon, doctor nor nerve specialist can tell her what it is, how it happened and what will happen. I am at a loss what to do next as at 85 they just don't seem to bother.
Have you looked into checking your grandmother into the Gerson Instatute in Mexico? It's not just for Cancer patients. :)
I am taking gabspentin, too for nuropathy pain and recently switched to methadone for substance abuse. Being prescribed painkillers seems to be the only answer to severe back pain anymore. But the withdrawal symptoms of the gabspentin is terrible. I have sweats, aches and a constant headache. Anyone know how long this will last or if the methadone will help? Just wondering what to expect.
After falling over and breaking her leg my mother ended up in 3 different hospitals. She was finally given a scan which we had been asking for repeatedly but her GP said it wouldn't show anything. The scan showed a tumour on her spine (benign) which was pushing on the nerves and had bent her spine. Finally we had an answer to her lower limb weakness. So after her double knee transplant, a rod put in her leg and a tumour taken from her spine, she then spent 3 months in a spinal unit learning to walk again. She is now 86, still uses a walker most of the time but is walking. She is still on gabapentin for the tingling in her feet (3 times a day) but often forgets to take the lunchtime one. From the stories I have heard, it is probably better for her to stay on the gabapentin than come off it, especially at 86.
My side effects made my chronic pain in my spine that I have had for yrs. look like nothing & a yr. & 1/2 off of my stupid mistake !! I still have side effects of negative & depression & the memories of how my dr. Retired & my awful general dr. Just threw them at me because they are not controlled until I could see a pain management Dr. Full Well knowing they were invented at least 30 yrs ago for epilepsy!! Called neurontin. They even give them to Bi- Polar patients when the major side affect is the brain! I took it for 3 months & the withdrawal was vomiting until I would pass out & be petrified to take a tiny piece of paid med & a sip of water & pray it would stay down.that went on for 2-3 weeks . The mental & my memory has taken a yr. & still coming & going . At least I have my right meds & fight the memory & angry of dr.s who do not have a clue how it works or no way to help you out of it. Any pain med or anxiety med will help !!! They won't give it to you. I had perfect memory recall ! Always ! Now when that lapse hits - I want to kill! At the ignorance of throwing those things around like candy because they are not controlled!
Even the walk in clinics for cuts & scrapes were giving out this poison for pain with no idea what they really do! No close to 1/2 of the side effects are listed on the pharmacy print outs. I can promise this will slowly disappear or have 10 black box warning on it. This drug will go away. I'm sure of it. Lyrica is its sister For fibromyalgia - it even makes your teeth fall out - I have heard. I don't doubt anything in this category of drugs. If I were your Dr. - I would prescribe .5mg to start for your panic until your nightmares are under control. It my be habit forming but it does heal the mental panic & symptoms. I could take 6 narcotics for 20 yrs & never have an experience of withdrawal & mental damage like this- I am I really getting sick of this addicting or habit forming crap. I am an older lady in pain & have severe nerve & panic attacks in the 1st place. I am severely addicted to Hershey bars - Toooo!! I forgot to tell you what I would prescribe you 5 mgs of-!!! I get that worked up! Xanax. You will sleep in peace & your healing will get better.. .5- alprazolam is the generic name. They may make you go to a psychiatrist or maybe check in with a psychologist these days. Stupidity and ignorance on the part of Dr's & the Govt. sticking their head in medicine instead of doing it the hard way & going to the streets!!!
I have to add to my previous post that the side effects of Lyrica are almost as bad as the withdrawal symptoms.I had swollen hands and feet and my face is bloated my fingers are like sausages and my rings probably need cut off.I have terrible wind (both ends!)and it's very loud!good job I'm on my own most of the day!not hungry but want to it starchy filling foods that I don't normally like.I was 9 stone at Xmas and now in September I am nearly 13 stone!non of my clothes fit me and I only feel comfortable in a tent like dressing gown. The pleasant effects that I had when z I first started to take them have gone and I only take them cos I can't face the withdrawal symptoms at the moment.I will try and stop again but I know I have to be in a strong state of mind.People will say it's my own fault for abusing drugs well, bloody he'll !I'm paying for it now.
I forgot to mention that my memory is really bad. Since starting pregabalin I cannot read a book or follow things. I remember things like birthdays but my short term memory is terrible. My family thinks I'm lying when I can't remember things they have told me just days ago. I will be talking and I won't be able to find the word I'm looking for. I used to be really articulate but now I feel like an i**** gabbing away making no sense. (By the way it took me ages to think of the word Articulate). I feel like I can't pee properly. I can't describe it but it just feels strange. My mouth is so dry but I don't want to drink anything. I hate myself for taking these horrible pills.
Omg feeling the same here. .no one is listening..been to he er 2 times amd a bunch of drs. I have a hemangioma on my spine causing neuropathy. Took one pill amd my jeart is racing and I feel drunk..Def not taking anymore..they r so worried about narcotics use amd in my opinion this drug is worse
I was dropped from my Pain doc because of not getting a message in time. I was not tapered off of neurontin, Percocet 10 and fentanyl patches all at once. I went to my pcp for help but she did nothing to help except tell me to find another pcp. I have had two failed back surgeries, screws and plates, right lung cancer surgery and left breast cancer surgery and am left out to dry. I do not know what to do. It seems if the doctors only want money and do not want to help ppl in pain. Never failed one drug panel. I can't stand the pain.
What is the Doctor replacing the Neurontin with? Doctors cant leave a pain patient with nothing, they must taper you off first. Is it your only med that is helping you, or is it too hard to know since the Neurontin was taken? I can talk to my Doctor, she cares though, that's why she reduced my Morphine which is very difficult but if I can help you with advice or other types of Doctor for your pain, I can only try my best depending on which State you live in and your age group. Best of Luck and what is right.
I feel for each person here that posted. I'm right there with you guys. There's one thing that I don't see mention tho, it's the loss of interest that you once you had before stopping the gabapinton. I have been off for 4 weeks now and I can't even enjoy a visit from my grandkids. I don't enjoy anything that I once did. I feel like this drug destroys your life. As I've always been told, live and learn..
i have spinal stenosis, had fusion surgery for L4&5 five years ago and was told today that I need another surgery for L2&3. My lower back kills me every time I stand and walk. I will not have that surgery again and asked for a pain killer. Dr. Said they don't give controlled substances and gave me "gabapentin" 300 mg .. 1 at bedtime. After reading the side affects, I will not take them as I am afraid and will throw them out. I am thinking of going to pain management. Any suggestions?
Franny, I think making enquiries into finding a reputable pain management practice, all the better if it's multidisciplinary, is a fantastic idea. Let us know how you make out.
Neurontin is not a strong drug though I dont know your strength ,you must be titrated off like if you take 3200 mg a day ,you must ask the Doctor to reduce you by 400 mg a month if you get 1600 mg or 400 four times a day than go down or titrate down 400 mg per month like this 1600 mg then 1200 mgs next month than 800 then 400 ,so take your dose down by %25 each month if you get to sick than by %12 each month your Doctor wont mind but maybe I can get you a Doctor if yours wont I was a Nurse and if you cant be honest then I cant help
Best of Luck
My input on Gabapentin: orthopedist prescribed it 2 months ago for back pain in 4 discs. After reading the side affects, I decided NOT to take them. I walk around as much as I can, exercise as much as I can so as not to lose muscle and only take Naproxin 500 ml every now and then when I can't stand the pain. After I get an MRI, I might try the shots, but that's it. I won't take anything that will make me groggy or screw up my head and whatever else. I take pills for blood pressure, thyroid, stomach, etc. and am sick of it all. I'm trying the best I can.

Please find her St John Wort oil and rub her legs. Google it. I study herbs I also have this issue and I was losing the ability to walk from the feet pain from it. I will not be taking it again. I am going to have to deal with the insomnia though. Good luck. I'm buying the oil.
I only took 600 mg at night and tapered down over a month & I still had some nasty withdrawals.
Magnesium and vitamin B really helped. I felt ok after a couple weeks, but not myself again for about a month.
Opiates were easier to come off. I took oxycodone every day for years, weaned off them, and withdrawals were over in a week. The third night was the worst.
Gabapentin withdraws are worse.
Magnesium really helped me.
Re: Tires and fatigued (# 8)
I took Magnesium when I stopped taking Gabapentin and it really helped the withdrawals. They seemed to last a little longer than a week. Two weeks before I felt totally normal.
Re: Smith (# 10)
I was on Lyrics for 5 years started having episodes where they thought I had mini strokes didn't know my name. After 3 times my Dr.said his guess was Lyrica, after months of withdrawal got off them.I had to go on gabapentin 4 years ago for nerve damage from a neck and back fusion,I started weaning myself off 2 months ago started a 600mg a day, finally took my last one Sat.morning.The burning in my hands and legs is getting better, the nausea is better today.I think I will beat this yet.Taking 2000mg of cinnamon,400 mg of magnesium and turmeric it helps.
I have been on gabapentin for a long time. I've been having urge incontinence for a while. Now I think I'll tell my p-doc to taper me off. Peeling in my pants is no joke. I just went off wellbutrin because I was swerving and falling. I got better when I got off
So, after orthopedic surgeon told me to take gabapentin 300 mg as I didn't want another spinal surgery fusion, I did NOT take them after reading side affects. Instead, I went to pain management, am getting epidural steroid shots (don't hurt) and take 5 mg of oxycodone/ Tylenol ONLY when necessary (like maybe 2 or 3 a week. It works, believe me. That's all I will do. I read too many bad side affects about gabapentin. The oxycodone only makes you feel a little tired, so I only take them at night and it calms my back and legs.
Go to main mng!!!! They are the only ones that can prescribe pain medicine and regulate them with the government!!!!! Drs just don't like prescribing them because of the epedimic!!! I had to go to pain mng, it sucks because it regulate your plans in your life!!! In pretty positive u hv to get a referral from your dr!!!! Maybe someone already helped u, idk, but prayers for u
