Hi Sonya - did your effects after quitting last long? Are you better now? I only took one 50 mg pill and am still suffering bad effects 3 days after stopping. Terrible anxiety, warm rushes through my body, feeling cold and shivering, cold hands and feet. Just woke up randomly an hour ago at 3 am in a complete panic and can't go back to sleep. Plus I overall just feel weird, like I'm not myself. Will this go away soon?

The sertraline has a half life so 50mg after 24hrs 25mg will still be in your system and so 24 hrs after 12.5 mg will still be in your system and so on. It's a horrible drug but to reassure you yu will feel better as soon as every last mg is out of your body I really feel for you as I suffered the exact same it took a week for me to feel normal but I had 100 mg in my system. Hang I there it will pass I promise

Thank you so much for replying Steven. This gives me some hope, and I really need it right now. I've had to call into work today, and am not even sure how I'll get through the day at home. I have moments of feeling a little better, then I'll get another wave of warmth, anxiety, etc. It's truly hell. I also have two young children and I'm having trouble caring for them. Does it get better day each day? I'm not really feeling the "better" yet...this is insane. Feeling like I will never take a drug like this ever again.

yes it is hell i had an awful time of it and took me a full seven days to feel normal again. the thing is i should have never been given these tablets in the first place. i can reassure you you will feel normal again although you may not feel you will ever feel normal but believe me you will you just have to ride it out i know how hard it is and i feel for you... everyday you will feel slightly better like i said about the half life of the drug so you can calculate everyday half of whatever mg you got it will be half of that the next day and this may be a very small amount still left in your system but because of the nature of the drug and what it does to your brain it can still make you feel terrible like you say waves of it until its completely gone i would say by thursday or friday you will feel normal again.

One thing that helped me when I got the waves coming on was to lay infront I F a fan with the air blowing on me it's really helped me get through the bad waves. I hope it helps

I was told there was nothing that could counter it although I have heard of people taking anthistamine or diazepam to calm it down although I was to frightened to take anything else incase it made me worse. You will get through this believe me it just takes time remember what I said about the half life nature of the drug so with every 24 hrs the drug half's in strength from what it was. I know its hard to believe with how your feeling but you will get better the fan helped me alot I slept with it on me. Stay positive as every hour that passes us a step forward to you feeling normal again.

Yes don't worry this is completely normal of this drug I had the same thing I thought I was better on the Saturday 7 days after taking it and bang I went right back to square one however the Sunday I woke up and that was the first day I felt it was totally out of my system so don't feel alarmed as this can happen.

Hi i think something else is going on with you. I think you need to see a primary doctor. I take sertraline and feel nothing like this. I wouldn't go to the ER , I would go to a regular doctor. When i started taking sertraline i did feel nervous but in a couple of days it went away. I now take 100 mg a day and it has helped me so much. I hope this helps. God bless and hope you feel better.

If you MUST take this medication, then yes, that's what I would suggest. However, after doing extensive research, never will I ever take an SSRI or psychotropic drug again. I have long term/permanent damage from the one Haldol inj. and following one dose of zoloft. Not only do people many times have difficult times beginning the drug, they also have a nightmarish time getting off. If you can possibly treat yourself naturally, through therapy, meditation, relaxation techniques, etc...you'll be much better off. Both in the long and short term. Studies have shown that SSRIs are no better than a placebo. Some swear by them... Unless you're suicidal or have tried everything else, please exhaust all other options before taking these drugs.

It shouldn't take too much longer, if you only took 2 doses. Things should return to normal pretty fast.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, anxiety, mood swings, dry mouth and weight gain.

Have you consulted your doctor? You may want to speak to them about trying a different medication?

It passed took a week but thankfully it passed as it was a terrible experience. I talked with doctor and he said that I must have had an allergic reaction to the tablets. As you can see this was a while ago now but thanks for your reply

Hi you can email me {edited for privacy} if you want to. I have just recently stopped (I hope) taking these monster pills. Please stop taking them. Doctors hand them out like sweets. It will be hard at first but you will be normal again and have proper feelings in a couple of weeks I promise. You may have the odd ping in your head, but hey, do you want to be you or a zombie?

I know exactly how you feel my friend. Please stop taking them. Ride out the storm for 5 -7 days and you will realize you are human again.

Thank you so much. I hope you're right. I will definitely try your suggestion. I'm thinking of going to the er to see what I can do to counteract this in the meantime. Both my doc and pharmacist said i should've felt better within a day or two and said they've never heard of this and don't really know what to do next except another anti anxiety/depression med. No thanks. Guess we're freak cases then. I will not allow another psych drug. Glad to know I'm not alone and you recovered from a similar situation. Thank you so much for answering.

I fully understand how you are right now and how you you feel , please be strong even though as others have said the drug will leave your body in a couple of weeks you have a brain and nervous system in your body and it has been trained to have its little smarties every day , you must now get out , interact and retrain your brain and basicaly tell it NO MORE , BELIEVE ME IT WILL EASE AND THEN PASS . Tell me do you feel more like a human being now even tho you are still struggling a bit ??.
Your body is now producing more adrenalin than normal at present , mine did too but it only lasted about 3 weeks , try and burn it off when the kids are occupied , YOU CAN DO IT

Thank you Steven and Alan...I ended up at the ER on Tuesday. At first of course, the nurse was trying to say that the original side effects made my anxiety act up, and that's what was going on now. I had to reiterate time and again that these were 100% caused by the medication. The nurse practitioner was much more understanding and was trying to figure it out. I spoke to them about the half life. She tested my blood and urine to be sure there was no serious adverse effect that can result from Zoloft. Those were all good. She finally called the psychiatrist on call. She said he immediately knew what was going on. He said to prescribe a beta blocker, Propanalol and Klonopin (for bedtime). She told me I could take my Xanax as needed throughout the day before able to take the Klonopin. I was prescribed these for 7 days to hopefully get me through this period. As a side note, I went to the ER a month ago for severe shoulder pain (an issue I have been dealing with for 18 months). A (obviously inept) PA gave me a pain killer which did not help much, and so he then have me Haldol (a major anti-psychotic), which off-label treats pain. Well, I had a major reaction to that medication and ended up having a dystonic reaction. I had severe nervousness/anxiety to where I was literally curled up in a ball on my floor all day, until my jaw starting smashing itself. I went to the ER after calling the nurse line and her telling me to go in immediately as I was having a dystonic reaction. I was given Benztoprine to offset, and that worked after two doses. I had to stay on that med for 4 days to get through the Haldol...long story short, according to this Psychiatrist on call, both of those meds can cause our neuro transmitters to basically go crazy. It puts them totally out of whack and also effects our dopamine receptors. So the Haldol opened this door for me and the Zoloft picked up where it left off apparently. So - I finally got a full night sleepTuesday due to the Klonopin. Woke up Wednesday feeling much more myself. I could still feel the effect in my body, but kept up with the Propanalol and Xanax throughout the day. I made it through the day feeling about 80% back to normal. Slept well again with the meds last night. However, this morning/afternoon, I have had a set back. I went into work thinking I would be okay, and about an hour in, started being unable to concentrate, started getting dizzy. Then started getting some rushes in my arms and legs again. Took half Xanax and that helped. But by the time I got home, I was having 75% of another full blown attack, even on the meds...warm rush through my body, then the dizziness/inability to concentrate, coldness/goosebumps, cold hands and feet....right back to where I was. So now I am concerned. I know it has not been the full 7 days, but it worries me that i had a better day yesterday, and now today I'm going backwards. Is that normal? I feel like I should be continually getting better, not going backwards.... :( Totally freaked.

Sorry you had a rough time , but Steven is right , give things time to work , and I have to say you are making yourself poorly by worrying all the time sweetheart .
Take it a day at a time , you will see a difference I promise , This time of year doesnt help dark nights miserable weather etc , you MUST stop panicking yourself the brain is a weird thing , give it time to settle down even if you do feel crap at times ok ?? Alan x
