Seraquel For Elderly Dementia Patient
(Newest replies first)
Updated
Father was put on seraquel. He is 82 and has dementia. He got very aggressive in an angry manner. He is also on Parkinson's medications, diabetic, and blood thinners. They use (nursing home) Ativan when he is having bad days. We were not aware they had put him on seraquel. He was then sent to facility to have all meds reviewed. Changed from seraquel to Risperdal while there and to new parkinsons medication. From what I have read even the Risperdal is not approved for this. Are there any options?

I appreciate your reply. As of now, none is a concern any longer. A week after being put back into the nursing home he fell again, fractured him and elbow. He passed away a week and a half later of pneumonia. So his pain is gone. Would be glad to try to give you more information if you think it would help others. I believe some of it was the doctor in charge but was unable to convince my mother to change.
Sorry, I meant to type 'why it was prescribed'. Had a brief computer glitch and autocorrect got the best of me. :-)
I would suggest speaking to his care givers, because if he was becoming aggressive, that may be why he's been given the Risperdal, it's a very potent antipsychotic that has a sedating like effect. It's frequently used in autistic children to treat symptoms of irritability and sometimes, it is given in low doses to help someone sleep, if other solutions haven't helped.
The FDA lists its other typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight gain.
They also have a black box warning on it that it has been known to increase the risk of death in elderly patients with dementia related psychosis. So, you do have valid concerns.
However, without knowing the specifics of what it was prescribe, it's hard to suggest alternative ideas. Can you find out more and post back?
