Quetiapine Fumarate Accord
UpdatedI have been taking the generic for Seroquel 400mg, Quetiapine Fumarate, for over a year. It treats my depression, anxiety, and insomnia. Two weeks ago I received a generic made by Accord. That first night I barely slept and my insomnia didn't improve. Also, my symptoms of depression, anxiety, and poor concentration returned. I called the pharmacist but he said I had received the correct medication. I went to my Dr. because I was having a major relapse of symptoms. He suggested I try a generic manufactured by a different company. So, I did, and wouldn't you know, I slept like a baby.
This recurrence of symptoms has been difficult. I work for a bank and I can't make mistakes. For the last two weeks, due to poor concentration, I have been making lots of them. I am happy that I am receiving medication that is working now, but I have to pay out-of-pocket to buy the med I need. My insurance company won't pay twice for the same medication.
What is most worrisome is that some people take this medication for schizophrenia and psychotic disorders. What happens when a schizophrenic doesn't get their usual dose of this drug? Could they harm themselves or their children? Some schizophrenics and psychotics hear voices which tell them to do terrible things. I have been reading about bad generics being produced in foreign countries that have little or no FDA supervision. Very worrisome.

Hi B, Sorry to hear about your experience with the generic made by Accord. Despite what manufacturers say about generics being equivalent, I don't believe this to be the case at all. There's a good reason why they are so much cheaper than brand names and I think a lot of it has to do with drug companies mixing inferior inactive ingredients with the medication, hindering its bioavailability. That's just my theory anyways.
Regarding the schizophrenic situation, that would be bad news for them and their condition since they really could get themselves in a lot of trouble not being in the right frame of mind from having received a less effective version of their medication. Pharmacies ought to tell patients before they pay for it, what manufacturer(s) they have in stock. This way we can avoid such catastrophes from the get go. Maybe a petition to all the large chain pharmacies would be a step in the right direction, but until then all we can do as patients and customers is double check to make sure we are getting what we pay for and not something else they throw in the bag just to get you out the door, so to speak.
I read that Accord Seroquel wasn't effective for you. Which one was? Thank you.
