Phenazopyridine 200mg

I have Phenazopyridine for UTI. It's late and I'm feeling the urge of pain this is the only medication I can find in my counter but it has a fill date of 12/9/11. Is it safe to take?

From what I could gather, most medications (aside from certain antibiotics) rarely become "unsafe" to take after the expiration. The only real concern I see from something that old, is that it may not be quite as potent as it once was, potentially making it more difficult to determine what an appropriate dosage might be.

However, on the contrary, the following article by Harvard explains how many medications can actually retain their potency for up to 15 years beyond the listed expiration date:

So on that note I think it's safe to assume that drug manufacturers are "very very" conservative about their approach for estimating drug efficacy throughout its lifecycle.
