i have been taking pantoprazole medicine for more than 8 years. I want to know what are the side effects of this medicine as i have been suffering with the problem of acidity.

My husband was diagnosed 6 yrs. ago with colon cancer resulting in him wearing a colostomy bag for 1 year. After his first surgery (had 4 in less than a month) he was prescribed SDZ-Pantoprazole 40 mg. He has been on this medication now for 6 yrs. and is now having trouble with his kidneys (possible dialysis in the near future). I understand that Pantoloc has a damaging effect on failing kidneys. I have asked repeatedly that he be taken off it but they say he needs it. He has been experiencing leg cramps. He has now refused to take this medication and I am going to have a talk with the pharmacist. I feel he has been on this medication much too long and has played a big role in the loss of kidney function. Could this be possible. I'm sure if he felt like he has heartburn or did have heartburn, would Pepcid or something similar like Gavascon not work the same way?
