My father in law had a bypass about 6 years ago. He then developed colon cancer. He went for the op and is now cancer free. He was told however to take Pantacid 20. After the 1st month the Dr just continued giving it to him. He now gets weak regularly and has to be hospitalised for blood transfusion. They do scans and diagnostics, but can't find anything. He also finds it difficult to eat, has the runs, passes lots of gas. Pls can someone help by telling me if he should stop or what we can do. The Dr is not very helpful and unapproachable.

Hello, Lee! How is your father-in-law doing?

Is this the only medication he's taking?

Pantocid contains the active ingredient Pantoprazole, which reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach to treat or prevent conditions, such as heartburn, GERD, gastritis or ulcers.

The diarrhea and gas can be typical side effects of this medication, as reported by the FDA.

I can't speak on the weakness and needing transfusions, that's not something that's been reported with this medication, as far as I know.

However, what I can tell you is that it is not intended for long-term use, it's usually only used for 8 to 16 weeks, then a break is taken or a different medication tried, due to the fact that it causes an increased risk of hip fractures.
