Pain Management Shreveport
(Newest replies first)

Updated

Does anyone know of any primary care physicians in the Shreveport/Bossier City/Haughton/Minden area that do pain management? I have been going to a pain management doctor here in Shreveport for about 6 years now, but it is just getting to expensive. He refuses to to go any higher on my dosage of Oxycontin, which is 30 mg 3 times a day. And he will not give me anything for break through pain. I am on Medicaid so I have to pay him out of pocket. Medicaid pays for 60 of my oxy's, but I have to pay for the other 30. If I knew of a primary care physician that accepts does some pain management and also accepts medicaid it would be a really big help. I'd really appreciate anyone that could help me out and answer this. Thank you.

sissy, you need to see a pain management dr. Louisiana is expanding Medicaid on July 1, 2016, but it does not pay for pain management drs.

Paul, that is something that is very risky. You have no idea what future laws and state policy's may be. If for any reason you can't be treated for opiate addiction you won't be able to get regular pain management. But it is up to each person to decide if it is worth the risk.

I've stopped going to pain management clinics 10 years ago. I originally went to get off the opiates to stop the extreme withdrawal symptoms. But then I soon found out that it completely got rid of my notorious pain

Amica, many regular drs don't do chronic pain management any longer, but it is up to each individual Dr. Now days most chronic pain patients that need Schedule II meds have to go to pain management drs.

I really don't think doctors want to write scripts for Oxus anymore now that the people out there that have abused this med they have changed the med so you can't crush them anymore and they gel up if you do so thanks to those abusers people with chronic pain have a hard time to get their doctor to write them or they WILL send you to pain management to prescribe you something and decide what and how much they think would be good for you

Paul, methadone treatment centers are not for chronic pain patient. If anything happens and you can no longer go to the clinic, you won't be able to find a Dr to manage your pain because you gave a history of being treated for drug addiction.

That's why I stopped going to pain management doctors. Best decision I've ever made was going to a methadone treatment center. I never run out of meds or go through withdrawal symptoms. I'm also given xanax with my methadone. I have serious nerve damage and not much use with my left hand, people are misled about methadone it helps better than any other pain medication I've ever taken. It's not just for opiate withdrawal.

Robyn, there are no federal or state laws saying you can't get pain meds unless you're a certain weight. But, weight does increase pain which often requires stronger pain meds. So it makes Denver that a Dr would want patients to keep their weight down.

Has anyone heard of a new condition of pain management requiring you to be at a certain weight in order to receive your medication? I have gained some weight over the last year and so last month Dr. Tanga comes in and tells me that unless I lose 4 lbs every visit my pain medication will be decreased by 10mg. He set my goal weight at what I was when I first started seeing him over 8 years ago which was 130lbs. At 130lbs I am way to thin, but apparently that doesn't concern him since is now a requirement by the federal government that you have to be thin to get pain management now. I lost 8lbs by the way and he was very happy with me. It seems the government wants to take over every aspect of our lives even down to how much we weigh.

Shen, I am going by Federal and State Laws. There are no laws that state only pain drs can write pain meds for non cancer pain. I do not know why so many drs lie about it. The next time a Dr tells you this ask them for the Code Of Federal Regulations reference number if they say it is federal law and the Louisiana Revised Statues reference number if they say it is Louisiana State Law.

He most definitely as rude as you have read. And you are not allowed to assist in your own care . At all and if you have questions he becomes angry and tells you you can see someone else all the while knowing that he is the only choice for cash pay patients. I didn't want and increase in mess I just need to have him change the frequency of my visit because on a limited income I can't afford every two weeks . And there is always a new excuse for why he won't change a new goal when the last goal has been met .

BL I'm just wondering where is your information coming from I was a nurse until about 2 yrs ago . Everyone of the dr I know say that there was a new law in place last year restricting them from writing prescription for chronic pain unless that provides has cancer. They can write for acute issues but not long term chronic pain . I was just wondering where to look

Most PCP don't write pain medicine anymore. They are all refer you to pain mang. I would advice you to keep the doctor you have because it's really hard to find another one also on a side not if you don't see the pain mang doctor you have for 3 month you will be dropped and considered a new patient.

Your right about that. It's a sad situation for everyone on LA Medicaid. I don't how it is in other states but here it's a mess and heartbreaking for the elderly and disabled. The sad fact is that people who are drug abusers ate still getting their drugs somewhere and those of us that need the medicine can't get our medicine.
