what new laws are you talking about?
My doctor told me i had to start seeing a pain specialist and he could no longer prescribe me the meds i have i have been receiving because he was my ob gyn..any ideas on what to do or who to go or see for these type of meds
Danielle is correct about the information she's received from her doctor.
Due to increased instances of improper prescribing and over prescribing of controlled substance medications, new stricter regulations have been put in place to discourage most doctors from prescribing such medications for long-term treatment of chronic pain.
General practitioners and surgeons, such as an OB Gyn, can only prescribe them for short periods of time, such as for a few weeks immediately after someone has been injured in an accident or had surgery.
Danielle, you likely won't find one that lists a speciality as just treating lower back pain, what you'll be looking for is just a pain management specialist.
And your best bet is to not ask them about prescribing any specific medication, when you first set up an appointment, as most doctors are taught to see that as drug seeking behavior and won't even let you in the door.
You'll need to get in for an appointment, make sure they get a full copy of your recent medical records and let the reasons why you need such medications speak for themselves.
Does anyone have a doctor they can recommend in that area?
I'm also not sure what type of female problems you're having, but have you ever had an endocrinologist look at your hormone levels?
VERWON these "laws" can't be all that new, i had my doctor monday and she didnt say a word about anything, she's an internal medicine specialist but she had me go to pain management and tell them that she was prescribing my methadone and pain management said it was ok and i got that in wringing from the pain doc so that helps me obviously, but please let me know more specifically what laws or what you mean because this kinda stuff always worries me. thanks
my doctor would have told me if something happened me and her are very close, i don't want to sound rude or anything but to me it sounds like your doctor just wants to play it very safe and not take any risk, especially since she's a ob gyn, i don't think they typically script pain meds. but anyway VERWON let me know please thanks.
These laws are fairly new. A doctor who is licensed to Rx methadone will still be able to do so, however family physicians will no longer be able to Rx medication needed for ongoing pain management, therefore will refer their patient accordingly. It takes a special license throygh the DEA to Rx methadone so YOU have it good bcuz your doc it top notch. Be happy and feel blessed because some people aren't as fortunate. Also under the new laws, a patient must meet certain criteria to be able to receive and continue receiving pain meds. This includes IV's, physical therapy and other alternate methods. Failure to comply is grounds for immediate discontinuation of pain management care. Because of the new laws set in place (2013) and the difficult circumstances created by these laws, highly suggest that if you currently have a good pain management physician and value the care you are receiving, COMPLY with your physicians requests/orders because finding a new doctor who is equally as efficient is slim to none. I truly wish you the best.
