They don't want an imediate releace. That's no what the OC did when taken properly. That's not what he OP does when taken properly. They're just saying that the drugs that, yes they've come to depend on, prescribed for their conditions which are incurable and unmanagable in any other way, have changed for the worse in order to avoid abuse by people other than themselves. They are paying the price for the abusers. I understand their frustration. There is a big difference between being dependent on pain killers because of chronic pain vs. drug abuse. It's bad enough that many doctors make pain patients feel like druggies. Your comments aren't any better. Where's your empathy?

It sounds like your fathers doctors never bothered to find a balance between his meds and his life. Those of us in chronic pain can't expect that all the pain will be taken away with drugs. You find the right amount to take to increase functionality, not obliterate it. Most doctors are so conservative with pain meds. He found some unethical docs who just want to throw scripts at the problem. I'm so sorry. I hope it's not too late to find a good doctor that will put him on a balanced program of meds, physical therapy, aqua therapy, acupuncture and anything else that can help, not make things worse. Of course this will be much more difficult because of his severe drug dependency. It is worth trying. Do some research on local doctors. Tell him his doctor moved if you have to to get him to a more ethical md, like one who remembers his oath begins with First do no HARM...

Jacqueline, I would like your opinion. I was taking 30mg roxicets for about a year now. On a very good day I might not take any, but that is rare. I would take 1 - 3 a day. On the rare occasion maybe a 4th. I'll be picking up my 30 Oxy80ocs early this week. I am concerned at the strength of the dosage, but I feel it's better to take it whole and let it dissolve slowly as it is designed to do, I don't like the idea of breaking or crushing which messes with the time release.

What are the actual contents of 80 mg. oxycontin? I.e., how much of an 80 mg. oxycontin pill is actually the controlled substance, and how much may be aspirin or other materials?

I liked your blog/ thoughts on this meds I am on hydrocodone have been for years I hate that I have to drug test etc.. once in a while to get my meds each months the thing about what all write about junkies using oxycodone etc.. is that at one time they were in pain and prescribed a medication then tried to go off it and now have to buy it off the street or steal it its such a bad problem. I know all this as my step sister was an addict of oxyz she has since passed in her sleep R*I*P* Patty she took too much for too long and didnt wake up one day...

I would recommend you take 30 Oxycodone they have the same things as the oxycontin with out the time release. Those are the only things that work for me and I have severe chronic issues in my back. I truly hope this help all you folks who are having issues with this new medication. Not to be recommended but I've also heard tripping or doubling your dose works, my Father's right hand was injured beyond repair and he told me that's the only way he can handle the pain. (Forewarning he has been taking these medications for 12 or 13 years.

"I recieved oycontin 80 mg but instead of oc on the side it has op? Any information would help. "

It's a safety feature. Too many people (especially cardiac patients who are accustomed to chewing baby aspirin and warfarin to help prevent pooled blood from clotting and causing stroke or death) were chewing them out of habit, and overdosing as a result. The pills marked OP maintain their release rate if accidentally chewed. These tablets use a release mechanism that one could think of as being on a "nano" level, whereby microscopic, yet relatively huge _molecules_ of the major excipient surround relatively small _particles_ of the drug).

Now that's a liberal view.

Another response to the originator commented that "No human can survive 4 or 5 80mg OC per day i dont care how much pain your in, ..." That could be true of humans who are "opiate naive". A doctor isn't going to rx 80 mg OC 4 per day unless tolerance has caused 60 mg tablets 4 per day no longer work well. And (s)he wouldn't have prescribed that unless 80 mg OC 2 per day stopped working well. What will the doctor do when the highest reasonable dosage of a given opiate no longer works well? (s)He will switch the patient to a drug that works on different opioid receptors. Due to incomplete partial tolerance, initially (s)he will start the new drug at a 50% equianalgesic dose, based on standard tables. Remember, the bodily tissues are still effectively "saturated" with the old opiate for a while, so the initial dose will likely seem a bit too strong, likely even producing a state of euphoria. This will probably last a few days and within a week of receiving half the equianalgesic dose, the patient will begin to feel too much pain and perhaps start to experience withdrawal symptoms. The next step would be to titrate upward, first to eliminate any withdrawal symptoms, and then to bring pain down to levels that the patient can manage with PRN breakthrough medicine.

I can totally understand the plight that u are going thru... about 6 years back I was suffering a chronic pain condition that the doctors couldn't figure out. They did a million tests to try to diagnose it, but in the meantime sent me to pain management to control the pain. I ended up on 2 10mg opana a day (for those of u who don't know what that is, it was supposed to be the "new" oxy... I mg of opana is equal to 2 mg of oxy). I was taking those daily for over a year, until I lost my insurance. Since they were new and had no generic equivalent, I could not afford the $250 prescription a month, so I had to stop taking them. The dr. gave me 5 mg percocet to try to help me come down off of them but it didn't help at all... not with the pain OR the withdrawal symptoms that I was getting. Long story short, I started self medicating with prescriptions that you can find on your own, off the street. It got completely out of control, and next thing I know I was snorting heroin. Now don't get me wrong, I am not saying it's the doctors fault that I went off the deep end and starting using dope, however if they would have been more concerned about diagnosing the problem, instead of just shutting me up about the pain, I never would have gotten to the desperate point that I was at. Also, there is a history of abuse and addiction in my family, which is something my doc never even asked! I think doctors need to be more up front with you when prescribing this medication, and warn you that u will be a drug addict for the rest of your life... even if you stop using the drugs (as I have now) you are STILL an addict, just one in recovery... I always called in "my legalized addiction". I wish luck to all of you, and know that there is help out there... sometimes you just need to know where to ask. It may not be the fanciest rehab in the world, but at least to will give u a fighting chance!! And BTW it turned out what was causing my pain was a sever form of fibro mialgia... so opiates wasn't what I needed in the first place, I needed nerve medications and blocks!!! I am now completely medication free, except I take a SMALL dose (2mg) of suboxone every day. It keeps all the old withdrawal symptoms away and also helps manage the pain. I know that one day I will have to give it up as well, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it!! The fact that I am still going thru all this, so many years after that fact makes me very angry at the medical industry, and the fact that they are more likely to give u a dangerous medication (not only pain killer but severe anti depressants and anxiety meds like xanax and klonopin) to shut u up, instead of taking the time to find and address the REAL PROBLEM!!!! I no longer go running to the doctor for every ache, pain, and sniffle... I am much more selective about what I see them for and I ask A MILLION questions about everything they tell me. I may annoy the living hell out of the doctors and nurses, but this is my life we're talking about! Now my father has been diagnosed with colon cancer, and I am just so so afraid the same pattern is going to repeat!!!

You are pretty illiterate. You do not drop it in a cola,a shotglass worth for 1 hour for immediate release or immediate high.OK Genius,if you wanted immediate release all you would do is buy a pill cutter and cut it in 4 pieces. But if you are going to take this medication, make sure you need to be on it. Just swallow it whole so it can do its job which is timed release. The FDA allows only Q12 hrs or for people like you " 1 tablet every 12 hours" or think of it as 60 a 30 day period. There are many people that need this medication legally for severe pain.Learn to spell and speak!!!

You are completely wrong with your numbers they don't make 180's they used to make 160 but that was before u ever started on these. Also if you broke your hip and they started you at that dose it would have killed you. The most you would have got for your hip was Percocet 10/325 which is equal to 10 mg oxy

You have no idea what pain can do to someone. It eats into your mind. Someone dear took her life because the pain from her car accident that threw her out the window and kept her in a coma for 2 months ate into her mind for 12 years. She couldnt take it..
dont speak for all ppl. When u say u dont care what kind of pain ppl r in then im sure u dont . But you dont know pain if you think like that.

Please! Don't give me that s***, people, in ur words, 'self medicate' daily. From aspirin to high blood pressure meds etc. and most if not all have withdrawals or side effects. So don't go putting down people that have a medical condition and a RX for a medication that improves their quality of life! If u or anyone else knocking people on Oxy as 'junkies' etc I hope to God u never have a debilitating injury or illness! Cause I guess that'll just make u another junkie too then!! Get a clue!!
