Oxycontin 10mg 2x A Day Vs. Hydrocodone 5/325 Every 6 Hours

I suffer from cervical stenosis and severe back pain that may require surgery. I am also suffering from a mental illness/deep depression/anxiety. I take several meds for the latter. I had been prescribed hydrocodone 5/325 every six hours, and that worked great for my pain, and I didn't sleepy. Now since changing Pain Mgmt Specialist, he prescribes OxyContin 10mg 2x a day, and this makes me so sleepy, especially with all of my other medications. This new doctor said hydrocodone was not good to take with my mental illness, but he gives me OxyContin? I don't get it, clearly the OxyContin is worse for me if I'm sleepy all the time, at least I could function and stay awake on hydrocodone. I don't know what to do, my physiatrist has even written a letter stating the hydrocodone would not interfere with my other medications. Has anyone else experienced this? Please help, any suggestions given would be so helpful

My pleasure there are other effective drugs that provide relief like the hydrocodone but does not produce the overwhelming lethargic sleepiness feeling that oxycodone preps can create. If you continue to experience those effects perhaps he can try you on a different class drug. It's unfortunate you were receiving relief with the hydro and a different doc had to play GOD as they often do thinking he knows better then a specialist treating your secondary condition. I wish you the best in achieving relief with limited side effects.
Thank you for replying, I do remember my Pain Specialist Doctor mentioning something to the effect that he would be concerned with me having huge crashing with my emotions on the hydrocodone, but I have taken that while on my mental medications and suffered no such thing. Again, thank you for responding because I cannot stand being sleepy or sleeping all the time.

It may have something to do with immediate release formulation of the hydrocodone .If you required QID (4 tabs daily) dosing the concern for inevitable tolerance as opposed to the extended release formulation of OxyContin although pharmacologically stronger poses less of habituation factor down the line.It may just take time for you to adjust to the OxyContin .Since your mental health prescriber didn't see a possible drug contraindication factor between your physcotropic meds and the hydrocodone that's the only conclusion I can draw. If not may I suggest you seek an alternate prescriber. I hope your condition improves .regards
