Don't play with your mothers health by experimenting whether the addiction is all in her mind. A Xanax withdrawal can kill her. She should be evaluated by professionals.
You cannot just stop someone's meds like that they are habit forming, you could potentially kill her! Get a rehab or doctor do it. You are talking two habit forming drugs, it is not a game, take her to a detox.
Stormy u asked and everyone on here gave you the TRUTH seems like you want to do it your way and your way only. Go ahead and play doctor with your mothers (cough, cough: insert sarcasm) medication. I will be praying that your mother lives through your games. Btw there are doctors that DO HELP WITH ADDICTION. But do it your way since you could careless about the warnings we have all given to you
Stormyweather, you cannot safely do that with the Xanax, a sudden withdrawal causes the risk of seizures, which could be fatal.
If you are concerned that she is addicted, then medical professionals need to be informed, so they can handle the issue. Your doing so, if you don't know what you're doing could put her life at risk.
That is why everyone else is trying to warn you not to do this.
Are there any other questions or concerns?
With your mothers age and such I would not play doctor when it comes to her medication. Let the real doctors do that. Like another poster stated if you change her Xanax to something else it could not only kill her but also put her a a VERY HIGH risk of having seizures. I really don't understand why you would want to play doctor when it comes to your mothers medication and not talk to her doctors about the concerns that you may have about her usage. This is just my opinion but as a pain patient myself that also takes a benzo (klonopin) I wouldn't want anyone trying to trick me when it comes to my medications nor my health. Try speaking with her doctors about your concerns of her usage before you do the fake pill switch to her. I'm sure you don't want anything bad to happen to your mother and by giving her something that looks like her real meds is a sure fire way of causing her serious harm
Do not do that her, that could kill, addiction is both mentally and physically. Take it from me because i am an addictand take the same meds, and let me tell you if she sites not have that in her system she WILL BE VERY SICK, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, can't eat, runny nude, hot and cold sweats. That is nothing to play with but there are other alternative, nethadone, or even better suboxone.
The addiction is absolutely a physical dependence, a placebo or fake look alike is ill advised, these substances MUST be weened down, gradually decreasing dosages and amounts, suboxone is specially designed for this very purpose for opiates, as far as xanax goes, the blue 1mg dose, should be gradually lowered. They come in. .50mg and .25mg, and requesting a doctor to place her on a lesser benzodiazepine is plan, as xanax is the strongest and most addictive of all the benzos, this should be done far enough in advance prior to admittance to any type of facility, other than a rehab/detox, the mental dependence comes after these substances are out of the body's system. The only safe way to accomplish this awful situation safely, make no mistake about the severity of the situation, cold turkey IS NOT A CONSIDERATION, doing so could be a fatal mistake. There are several safe ways to gradually get someone off these substances, placebo and cold turkey are the TWO WAYS NOT TOO!!! Good luck and stay the course.
Re: stormyweather (# 4)
First off, as someone who has had a long history with all types of medications and a long history of abuse, albeit abuse as a dependency and not so much addiction, although there are addictive parts as well. Furthermore someone who has both parents that have a long veritable history of addiction and decency with both also having chronic illnesses and serious health issues. Father has had chronic knee issues for the last 35 years that have required lots and different types of meds for pain, and recently was given by doctors 6 months to live due to congestive heart failure (this month was the final month, but it could have more or less time) and is on hospice with a many med regiment. My mother has a herniated disc, a ruptured disc, and a deteriorating disc at the lower vertebrae for the last 35 years and has been on a veritable amount a different pain meds for 25 years. She has had a bout with cancer in her eyeball, a tumor which fortunately was able to be dealt with although she is losing vision due to malpractice over the last 4 years and has taken so many different meds over time the list would be too much to cite. Both of them were patients in south Florida for several years during the pill mill abuse from 2008-2011 and we're given Roxicodone and Xanax in high amounts. So I have the experience to cite to comment. So as to your mother... those two medications should not be even prescribed together. I have known people I grew up with whose hearts just stopped from the mix. A pill shill that your mother was seeing doesn't care...they write the scripts and send patients on their way. It's best to get away, so if the "Doctor" (more of a drug peddler than a person of medicine who are supposed to be bound to a hypocratic oath to do no harm and help when can) was to drop her patient when it's needed first anyway.
Research medical practitioners that can help with the transition. Find a real Practitioner and go over options for a possible change in meds. I can say that there are safer pain meds that work longer and are safer. In the situation with the Xanax your best option for a change is to switch to Clonazepam...it's the same chemical but time released. Her new physician will most likely opt for this but there are others that can be utilized. I could go on further ...much further but, both Roxy and Xanax are dangerous even at nominal dosing. Mixing and overtaking is extremely hazardous. There are options. Just find a medical professional that can help you explore. Also, I believe you had said that she might've been headed to a nursing home. They would approach it in similar fashion. They may change regimens and would be monitoring for safety and can take appropriate steps to help if complications arise or they might change meds altogether depending on the M.D. & on staffs judgments. I hope this can help. If I think of other things that I feel are important I will return and post. if there is any question you would like to ask and I can help please post and I'll respond. I have lots of accumulated knowledge and sometimes a particular query/question will get a lot of stuff I know out for answers. I know your post was a year ago so there may be a new situation with new questions and if I can help I will certainly try. If I don't know the answer...I have people I personally know such as others that are knowledgeable or hospice nurses and Doctors themselves.
Well my mother is a DRUG ADDICT never said my father and I were going to stop her meds just that we would like to see her response after she was given something safe that resembling the drugs because as you say her so called doctor is pill writer and has already said he will be dissmissing her due to her drug seeking behavior. She has dementia ... these rugs are the devil yea if you use them correctly they can be life saving BUT SHE IS NOT...AND I SIMPLY ASKED FOR A SAFE ALTERNATIVE THAT RESEMBLED IT. BUT I SUPPOSE I WILL LET THE ADDICTION CONTINUE .."REALLY " WOW TGIS WAS SO HELPFUL ...COUGG COUGH SARCASM
