Nexplanon & Hypothyroidism?
UpdatedI got my nexplanon implanted a year and a half ago soon after I received news that my thyroid was swollen and been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. There is not history of this in my family and have never had any problems like this, I'm still pretty young being 26. I've had 3 kids and my weight has always be stable until now. Hypothyroidism is ruining my life and I believe it might have something to do with the nexplanon because this all started when I got it implanted. Thoughts??
Hello, Holly! How are you?
No, that's not a normal side effect of Nexplanon, as listed by the FDA. Typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability, PMS-like symptoms and irregular bleeding.
Had you ever had symptoms of a thyroid issue in the past?
Are you on any other medications?
Thank you for your response. No I haven't had any symptoms in my past other then my weight but I've always been able to adjust ( I've had 3 kids) I've always had energy, never hot flashes.
I have asthma, so I regularly use my inhaler. I have tons of allergies, so I take meds for that. But nothing else.
Is it a steroid inhaler?
Those can cause some health issues like this, in some people that use them.
Nope, that one shouldn't cause such issues.
Have you considered having the Nexplanon removed to see if things balance back out?
Are you on a thyroid medication?
I'm sorry for all the questions, I'm trying to explore ideas and perhaps help you discover a solution.
I am 28 and since I was 15 weighed in at a steady 125, even after both of my children were born at 19 and 23. At 23 I had implanon implanted. At 27 I had it replaced with nexplanon which I've had now for a little over a year. I've gained 35 pounds in three months, my hair is falling out, I am constantly menstruating, very tired, sore throat, the whole "thyroid" shebang. I had the implant removed yesterday and I get my thyroid test results Monday.
I truly believe the implant did this to me and I am looking for answers and others to share with. With all of my family in the medical field I am convinced I will be diagnosed with a thyroid disorder and I am already anxious to keep this from happening to others.
Please contact me if you share this goal.
Yes, I do believe the implant is linked to thyroid issues. My daughter had full lab work up for fatigue last year, all came back normal. In July her implant was put in and by November her blood work showed hyperthyroid levels in T3 & T4. She also now has a fibroid tumor in her breast. Both dr at Cleveland clinic & gyn want the implant out right away. My daughter is also extremely emotional and says she does not know why she is having burst of anger and just breaks down to tears. I read many stories online of emotional outburst and severe depression after implant was put in. One teen took her own life. My daughter who never wants to talk about how she feels sat me down desperate and said she never cried so much until her implant and she wants it out. Last night we noticed the left side of my daughters neck near her thyroid is now swelling up. Her step sister has already had to have her implant removed only a few months after receiving it. If you want it out trust your gut and don't wait.
I had the same issues. Someone has started a petition requesting these be studied on change.org. Go sign it. Three months after implant, I had major symptoms and was advised of Hashimoto Hypothyroidism. After lots of research I too believe it's the Nexplanon and had it removed yesterday to see if I can bounce back from this horror.
I just had my implant removed because it made me feel awful. About two weeks after removal, I swelled up like a balloon and felt like I was going into anaphylactic shock...went to the doctor and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, my number was 50.36 for TSH which is crazy high... Never had any problems with thyroid before...
Hi there, I have Hashimotos and am currently banging my head against a wall with various specialists, asked about the implant and it was dismissed... But all seemed to happen at the same time, so would be very interested to hear how you are getting on since removal. I'm a mum to 2 kids with a job so I can't manage like this for much longer, it's taking over my life :(
Im having the same problem.. And this is my 3rd time with it and it happends every time.
I had mine inserted on 2/16. I was in the process of losing weight and as soon as I put it in, losing weight became physically impossible. I started eating healthy low calorie/carb and I hike between 4-5 miles a day and I'd just be exhausted instead of losing anything. Extreme hot flashes. Sweating constantly. So much fatigue. Swelling and pain in my legs. I've become a social recluse since I have no energy to go out. No period for a year. My doctor insisted constantly this wasn't nexplanon, I just wasn't aware of what I was eating and needed to do some squats. I listened to her for a year before I decided I had ****ing had it. I got it out, she tried to pressure me not to. My problems have gotten even worse now that it's out. I feel it messed something up permanently in my body. I have a lump on my thyroid and all the symptoms. She did a test a few months ago and my level was higher than normal but she insisted it was nothing. Suggested I ate frozen meals so I knew I wasn't over eating. I've been obsessing over counting calories since I was 13. I have a damn kitchen scale for this. I wanted to punch her in the face.
I am having these same issues with my Nexplanon-weight gain, mood problems, depression, hot flashes, heart racing randomly.. Can I ask what you girls are using for birth control now if anything? Also, what are you doing about your issues? I have an appointment on Tuesday to talk about my options. Trying to figure out what birth control I should use instead since I have awful periods.
This is me to a T, I have all these symptoms I'm due to get mine out in four days & I can't wait. I have constant headaches my weight gain is nearly 3 stone from a healthy 9 stone , in 9 months. My doctor thinks it thyroid problems which is down to this implant. My hair isn't growing I'm constantly tired, I have maybe a month clear of spotting. I'm counting down the hours till this thing is out, I'll also be having bloods & swabs because my doctor doesn't believe the implant is causing this
My girl friend had the NEXPLANON implant for 6 months and ever since then she has a rash and bumps around the area of the implant and since has spreaded ..?
Two months after giving birth, my girlfriend was happy, losing her baby weight and excited about life in general. Then she had Nexplanon put in her arm. The depression, anxiety (to the point she was scared to leave the house), inability to lose weight and crazy mood swings were pretty bad. She recently had it removed and was starting to feel better. Then, she was tired all of the time, having problems feeling worn out just doing dishes. Her doctor diagnosed her with hypothyroidism after telling her that it has nothing to do with Nexplanon. I call BS. She's going to have to take medication for the rest of her life now. I'm encouraged to hear from other people who are dealing with this.
It doesn't matter what normal side effects are listed. Pharmaceutical companies pretty much regulate themselves with the amount of lobbying that goes on. I read some of the studies done on nexplanon and the levels of many hormones, including thyroid, are definitely affected by nexplanon. I was surprised about all the things that don't matter to the FDA. They say something like, "although the levels of hormones are affected by nexplanon, the benefits of having an effective birth control outweigh the issues" - Maybe they do for you and your money hungry company, but not for me. Not for someone who wants to have kids one day (I've had regular periods my whole life until nexplanon and now I hardly have one even after it being out now for a year) and cares about their health. F*** nexplanon. I use condoms now. I don't know why I ever thought it was necessary or smart to pump my body full of hormones when I could just use a f***ing condom. ughhhhhh lessons learned.
Re: Peach (# 13)
CONDOMS ALL THE WAY. I will NEVER touch hormonal birth control again. Although after what nexplanon did to my body, my Dr. Says I probably won't be able to have kids anyway! Permanent birth control.. just what I signed up for... NOT
I had my first implant of nextplanon put in at 16. No history of cancer in my family. I was in perfect health. Six months later, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I’m now 25. I’ve had three implants since then. I had thyroid cancer and a total thyroidectomy this year! I now have high cholesterol and low calcium. I have to see four doctors and take medication the rest of my life. I have gained 30LB. I burst out crying at times for no reason. I’m angry at times for no reason. My memory is becoming worse. Today after reading so many reviews on common thoughts with the nextplanon, I am going to have mine removed and see if I see a difference.

What symptoms did you notice to get the evaluation that led to diagnosis of the cancer? Just curious. I'm currently on nexplanon and have the cholesterol issue, and really think i may have thyroid issues as well.

You can’t have hypothyroidism if you have a thyroid it’s impossible
I've had the nexplanon for almost a year now. After giving birth I waited about 7-9 months to get it and I was losing weight but then I started not losing weight. I'm active in the gym and daily and somehow I'm gaining. I've always had problems with fatigue and a lot of symptoms that parallel hypothyroidism. I felt that I've had a.d.d. undiagnosed since I was a child. That being said I've never had problems losing weight before. I gained a lot during pregnancy (over 80 lbs.. 10/10 do not recommend lol) but before the implant I was already down 45-50lbs. I just went to my new doctor the other day and he suggested a thyroid test. I totally forgot that I had the implant for a while and wish I would've asked him if there were any links. I do hope that my previous issues get addressed but if I come back from the tests with a hypothyroid diagnosis I'm gonna lose my sh*t. My family does not have a history of this. I do have fibromyalgia, anxiety, and arthritis already. I'm glad I found this thread. I'm going to make an appointment to get it removed asap.
Hi Holly. I just received my diagnosis and #metoo, NO FAMILY HISTORY! I believe Nexplanon is the cause as my thyroid has been tested regularly in my CBC panels. TSH levels were normal in February and off the charts in August. I ended up in the hospital with a low heartbeat and heart rate and that’s how my diagnosis happened.
Re: Verwon (# 1)
Many women, including myself, have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism after receiving Nexplanon. People with no family history of this disease. Merck already lost one massive lawsuit concerning the previous drug, Implanon, because of its detrimental effects on women. Go look it up. Money alone will never solve these lifelong problems that we women face because of this drug that the FDA approved. Remember Thalidomide? We just want other women to not have to deal with the physical and mental problems that were thrust upon us because our doctors said it was 'safe'.
Re: Audra (# 6)

I am going to have mine removed for exactly all the same reasons. I thought it was in my head but I started researching and now I know it's common.
