My New Doctor Will Not Prescribe Methdon For Pain Or Wean Me Off

I have been takeing methadone 10mg 3 times daily for 4 1/2 years. I moved to Sacramento and my new doctors office will not perscrib it to me. I asked them ok then can you wean me off slowly. I told them I am ready to get off but have kids to care for 1 being special needs. I have no one to help me take care of them while I withdrawal from methadone. They said sorry your on your own. How can they be so cold. I over never took more than prescribed. I never run out early. I have not ever asked for dose increase. I can't go cold turkey. Please help

Hello, April! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about the problem that you've run into.

However, it isn't just you, it is happening to people all over the U.S.

I know it puts people in a very bad spot, but no doctor is obligated to prescribe you any medications, or treat you for anything, unless your life is in immediate danger.

And if this is a general practitioner, then they can't prescribe it for you. New regulations were put in place this year that severely restrict what they can prescribe, why they can prescribe it, how much and how long they can prescribe it, so anyone requiring controlled substances on a long-term basis must see a specialist to continue receiving them.

Did you ask them about referring you to someone that can help you?

Thank you I actually found out I can still see my my regular still. I' do not need to switch doctors. She is a family practice doctor. She was appalled at the way I was treated at
The clinic in Sacramento. She knows me well and could not belive the way I was stereotyped. It was not only that he would not prescribe it is was the way he treated me. He did not even want monitor me while went off cold turkey. He did not want to give me nausea med, or any other non narcotic meds that help your body from withdrawal. He said if you need medication for withdrawalls than you are an addict and I am not prescribing any thing to an addict not even Tylenol. I would think a doctor would want to help a person that is ready to stop a narcotic medication. Not send them away not knowing what to do. I still had a lot of my methadone persciption left like 18 days worth. I asked can you tell me how to do a taper myself using the methadone I have. He said NO that is up to you to figure out. What me!!! I AM NOT THE DOCTOR he is. I plan on reporting him. And not because he did not want to prescribe methadone but because he offered no me no help at all. He did not even refill my prescription for atenol and that is not a narcotic it is for my rapid heartbeat.

Hi sorry to hear about your trouble, but once you say you want to wean off then they will not help someone addicted, which is so stupid, because every one knows that your body will need the drug after a period of time, that does not make you an addict, but some Dr's just wont prescribe that no matter what, and a hospital!!! forget it they will just let you get sicker and sicker. He should of prescribed your heart meds that was cruel and dangerous. glad your ok now tho, now after 10 yrs I have to find a new Dr too, it is so scary, cuz mine dropped me for no reason.

Hi April, I read your post and my heart really went out to you. I am trying to taper off methadone now and it is so hard. I can't imagine what you are going through or I should have gone through. How are you doing now?

April, sorry to hear that, I am going through some what the same thing, I had a Dr for 10yr', he dropped me because he said he doesn't take Medicare, I used to have blue cross blue shield, but my husband retired and I have disability and he said he had to drop me. He gave me, because of a bad back surgery 16- 10mg methadone a day 30-20 MG oxycontin for break through pain at night, and clonopin for stress from the pain, and temazapam for sleep, mind you 10 long years so I joined Kaiser because I heard that they were kind, and boy was I wrong, this Dr I say is new, young and he didn't even look at my back, and said he wants to send me to there pain clinic and wean me off of the clonopin and he suggested to the pain clinic to just give me one pain med and not as many methadone as I was on. I am so upset I have been on all this for years and it has all helped me, now to cut me down and take me off the rest of the stuff is so mean! I don't know if I can see someone else in family practice or not cuz there computers all hooked together. your old Dr. legally should give you a 30 day supply until you find another Dr. so try and call your old DR and tell them the problem and maybe they will mail you an RX till you find another Dr. good luck my old one did but, I didn't know that I was in for this shock if I went to Kaiser! Good luck legally they have to give you 1 more to last 30 days. so call unless you got your 30 day supply already.

Kally, have they started to taper your methadone? I was put on 100 mg of methadone for pain and was on that dose for over 10 years. That was done in California and then I moved to Texas and my doctor has been tapering me down I am now at 50 mg and it has been very difficult. I have had constant nausea, severe depression and anxiety which can become unbearable at times. My doc doesn't seem to believe me when I tell him I am having all this problems. I am very frustrated.

I am on a slow taper and I am paying cash to see my old doctor. But it us getting to expensive. I am trying to find a doctor in sacramento that takes my insurance that is willing to help me taper off. I have healthnet medical and there is not many doctors to choose from. And you can not be seen by a doctor at the hospitals. I cant wait to be methadone free. Its crazy to me that a person that wants help to stop taking a medication can be turned away.
