Morphine Sul 30mg Er

Hello; my name is Kitty. due to several back & neck surgeries I have tried several pain meds. i'm 70 yr/s old & had these surgeries about '84. as I've aged the pain is much worse. I now take a dark pink tab ms morphine sul 30 mg er ever 12 hrs & lortab 10/500 as needed which is usually 4 to 5 times daily. I don't know if the morphine is helping or not. I don't want to take something I don't need & am type 2 diabetic using insulin. if I continue taking the morphine & stop by cutting back slowly on it what side affects will I have? I don't want to become dependent on them i'm apprehensive about taking them.

Hi, Kitty! I'm sorry about the pain you're having!

Well, one important thing about the Morphine that you need to know is that the ER designates them as being time released tablets, so you can't cut or break them, if you want to cut down. Doing that could cause you to get too much of the medication at once, which may result in overdose.

Thus, if you do want to cut down on them, you'll need to either space them further apart gradually, or get your doctor to prescribe a lower dosage. And you may experience some minor withdrawal effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, dizziness and chills.

However, I'd also like to explain that dependence occurs with any medication you take regularly for a long period of time, even life sustaining medications, such as those used for heart conditions. It's really just due to your body getting used to having that substance added regularly, but it is much different than addiction. Addiction occurs due to abusing something, not just taking it as prescribed and/or needed.

To see if it's helping, you could just try taking it by itself and not taking the Lortab for awhile to see how much your pain is relieved.

And the Lortab also contains a narcotic, it's a mixture of Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen, so it has just as much potential of being habit forming as the Morphine does.

Really, I think a lot of it is going to come down to quality of life, if you're in a lot of pain, that coupled with your age is probably going to make enjoying life very difficult and each will feed the other, worse pain will cause more rapid aging and vice-versa. Thus, while I understand why you are worried about being dependent on narcotics, it just might be the only practical option for you.
