MY HUSBAND HAS BLADDER CANCER AND WAS PRESCRIBED 20 MG OF METHADONE EVERY MORNING. HE WAS ALSO GIVEN MORPHIN SULFATE 60 MGS TWICE A DAY. HOW SHOULD THESE MEDICINES BE TAKEN?

I have been on prescribed doses of Methadone and Morphine Sulfate IR since 2002 for intractable pain due to idiopathic adolescent severe scoliosis and kyphosis plus several spinal injuries. I am 67 yrs old and will finally have surgery next month. This involves replacing all discs (bulging, herniated or torn), stabilizing 4 fractured vertebrae and fusing in 3 sections all vertebrae from C2 to S1 using a paste grown from my own bone cells & temporarily using rods and screws until the fusion "takes". I have no other health issues except mild osteopenia. It is a 3 day surgery & will stop my forward 90 degree bend from compressing my internal organs and the numbness/pain in my back and limbs. Methadone (and morphine) have saved my life and enabled me to walk (w/rollator) 3X a day with my dog to stay mobile. The stigma placed on Methadone is undeserved. I have used from my current 40mg/day to 90/mg a day as my long acting pain med, and Morphine Sulfate IR 15 mg as my breakthrough med, from current 60mg/day to 120 mg after spine trauma or accident injuries. Methadone is extremely long acting, up to 24 hrs. Which is why those withdrawing from opiates are dosed once a day. All opiates can cause constipation which is why my Dr. Has me take a stool softener and drink lots of water/fluids. The only other medications I take are 400mg ibuprofen 3X day for inflammation and 1 OTC Prilosec. Neither pain med makes me nauseous, and I have been on everything in the book; some tore up my stomach, like hydrocodones or oxycodones. Others like Fentanyl/Actique put me in lala land. And yes, at my higher doses my meds did make me drowsy, but I needed the sleep to heal. Thank you for listening.

My other question was is it dangerous to take 10 milligrams of Valium while I'm on 190 milligrams of methadone? I get bad headaches & anxiety attacks so the Valium is very helpful.

I have migraines and sometimes have to go to the hospital & they give a morphine shot to knock it out. The only thing is I'm on 190 milligrams of methadone,my question is will I feel the effects of the morphine shot?

Thank you, that was the smartest answer about methadone that I've ever read. You're right, it's not a blocker and I don't know how many times I've read someone mistakenly say it is and give someone else the wrong information. They do compliment each other and work pretty damn well together.

Hi Debra, first I would like to say, I'm not sure how to react since your post was from 2011? I am also a Stage 4 Cancer PATIENT with a very rare cancer called PHEOCHROMOCYTOMA! VERY RARE & IM ONLY 42! I ALSO AMA PHARM M.D., WHICH BASICALLY CAN DO MOSTLY EVERYTHING A DR. CAN, EXCEPT WRITE SCHEDULE 2 MEDS!

AS FAR AS YOUR HUSBAND, HOPING HE IS HEALTHY AS AN OX IN 2016? I actually was on a VERY SIMILAR REGIMENT. I TOOK A CERTAIN DOSE OF METHADONE ALONG WITH 3 OTHER MUCH STRONGER OPIATE'S! I SERIOUSLY needed that kind of PAIN CONTROL & THIS WAS ABOUT 6 WEEKS AFTER 1 OF MY 16 hr Surgery marathons! THANK GOD FOR BEING KNOCKED OUT & NOT KNOWING THE OUTCOME.

THIS NEEDS TO BE DISCUSSED WITH PAIN MANAGEMENT PARTNERS & DEFINITELY A PHARM MD (THAT'S WHAT I DID FOR A LONG TIME TIL I'VE GOTTEN MY CANCER BACK!). SO THE 'MAIN' REASON THEY WOULD MIX METHADONE (AN OPIATE ITSELF, JUST A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN THE MORPHINE, OXYCODONE, ECT... METHADONE BLOCKS YOUR OPIATE RECEPTORS IN YOU BRAIN, SO WHEN YOUR HUSBAND WOULD TAKE HIS MORPHINE HE WOULDN'T FEEL "SIMPLY PUT, OUT OF IT & NOT NEARLY AS EUPHORIC, IF AT ALL?"....BUT AS I SAID I WAS ON 3 PAIN MEDS, EACH TRIPLE THE STRENGTH AS MORPHINE! BUT ALONG WITH MY MORPHINE DOSE WHICH WAS IF I CAN REMEMBER ABOUT 60-70MG!

THE MAIN FLIP SIDE OF ALL THIS CAN BE OVERDOSE THAT WILL KILL YOU VERY FAST! THAT MOSTLY HAPPENS THOUGH ONLY WHEN SOMEONE IS NOT TAKING THE EXACT MEDS CORRECTLY!

My wife got off it. Besides sneezing ive gotten down to 5mg and wasn't sick. Coming off 30s oxy, that was a horrible experience and that wasnt even a full two days. Methadone helps control it in so many ways. The benefit outweighs the bad sides of it. But remember keep doses low, there's no need to go over 40mg in my opinion. There's more to my story on how it helped other people too.

Methadone compared to comong off of Morphin EX was a piece of cake. By back blew another disc, and had to go back on something. The doctors put me on MS Contin. It's been the worst experience of my life. Methadone over Morphine, anytime.

Methadone should be taken with opiates, my reason is this: No matter how hard you try if you take oxys, lortabs, etc, once you get addicted to it, it doesn't matter if you're not abusing it. You have to keep taking more. It's a hard balance but if you take a very low dose of methadone it keeps the cravings in check. I take 5 mgs of dones and 30 mgs of oxys even less sometimes. If i was taking just oxys it always climes up cuz after awhile it doesn't help but methadone keeps you from wanting more; in my case anyways.

Is his Morphine Sulfate liquid or tablets? Methadone is a very good and strong pain medication. Morphine is usually used as a breakthrough medication. That's what I take. Is that a help to you? If you have anymore questions please don't hesitate to let me know.

Do what I did. Get rid of the methadone and go.on lyrica.. Methadone controls ur life and withdrawals are the worst of them all..20 days and still suffering.

Ive been on methadobe for 4 years, started at 40mgs down to 5mgs. At one point I was taking 2mgs of xanax a day for 5 months with it... I'm still alive but i went through a living hell for 2 months when i stopped taking xanax and was taking a little bit of powder of restoril (benzo sleep aid) so i wouldn't have a seziure. U cant s***, your stomach feels like its gonna pop out oxys. Methadone didnt work to stop that withdrawal, so please never mix the 2. I survived but having to work and take care of a family it was a nightmare. Surprised i made it thru. I'm 40 and latino. I knew my limits but withdrawls are never fun. I did on my own because i was embarrassed, but it started cuz i lost my best friend and xanax did help.

I've been on methadone for three years now. I've never saw anyone pass from methadone and morphine but definitely methadone and any benzo, better known as downers. (Zanax, kolinapin, so as, etc.). Benzos are downers and mixed they will confuse your heart and brain not knowing whether to relax u or boost u. Absolute No No

#Debra.... the main reason that your doctor gave your husband the low dose of methadone is so that the morphine would work just the same. The only difference is that if he wasn't taking methadone the morphine might make him a little woozy like other opiates. So now he is able to take the morphine twice a day and be able to have a clear head and not feel so out of it. I'm a pharmacist for 20-plus years and I'm also a stage 4 cancer patient. So don't listen to those people that say that methadone blocks the pain effects of other opiates like morphine or oxycodone or fentanyl opiates like that. In fact a lot of people take methadone because they are addicted to the needle. So they use methadone as an alternative so they don't get Hepatitis C unless they haven't already and in which it's too late. But regardless I was taking about 20 milligrams of methadone and about 3 or 4 opiate pain medications at the same time to help my pain. The only thing that methadone did for me was help take the opiate pain medication and the side effects which is the out of it feeling and just help my cancer pain. Most of these people that try to offer advice have no clue what they're talking about I went to school for many years for this and was also a patient. So I have a lot of knowledge in the field. I'm not just an addict, ECT. I take my medications as prescribed and always have. I wouldn't have been a pharmacist for 20 years if I had a serious problem with drugs. {edited for privacy}. ANYONE THAT CAN USE SOME BENZO ADVICE I WILL DEFINITELY HELP YOU AS I HAVE MANY RESOURCES!

Totally right methadone is an evil drug. I'm from England and except for private doctors, who are almost legal drug dealers for the rich, no doctors here would prescribe such dangerous cocktails of drugs.

WHen you are taking ANY medication for pain, you are NOT AN ADDICT. People on high-powered medication need to get the correct terminology straight due to the IGNORANCE of the general public. When you are prescribed any medication to aid in a medical issue and you become tolerant -- this makes you OPIOID TOLERANT. NOT addicted. There is a difference. With the FDA all over people and the doctors that are attempting to help them by threatening to take their licenses or taking their license, closing clinics, putting the entire practice on the street while the harass the doctor, etc., you MUST be an advocate for everyone in your position. It is cruel and unusual for the US government to put legitimate pain patients out on the street and call them "addicts." This not only effects the doctors and the patients - it causes the supporting family and support system to "decide" their sick relative/friend to be looked upon as having a "problem" with drugs, as opposed to having a problem with severe pain due to accident, disease, and ailments. This witch hunt must stop. Pain patients were blind-sided when the DEA moved in and ruined the very lives of people that have trouble functioning anyway. They have destroyed the weakest and ones that have the least energy to fight. Now that their families are suspect of whether they are addicts (or try everything, including chastisement to get them off these life-saving medications). Don't give anyone a reason to call you an "addict" -- correct them on the spot. Somehow, we must ban together, write your representatives, whatever. Get your family in line and get them to help - have them accompany you to doctors and make sure they help to make the doctor know that you are ligitimate and you are not to be taken lightly.
