Has anyone noticed a reduction in allergies when taking Metformin? Since starting the tablet 18 months ago (I was on 1000mg slow release) I have not needed to take anti-histamines. I even had a severe allergy to cats that also disappeared. Lately I have had diarrheoa which has been attributed to the Metformin and so I stopped taking it. Allergies have returned. Has anyone noticed this connection?

Hello, Ruth! How are you doing?

If you have diabetes, you can't just stop taking this medication, that will allow your blood sugar to get out of control, again.

It is normal for problems to be more prevalent, when one has a health condition that is out of control. Your body only has a limited number of resources to use to fight any one thing, so it prioritizes, elevated blood sugar is more dangerous than an environmental allergy, so it puts more resources towards trying to control it and protect your vital organs. That means less are available to deal with the allergies.

Is your doctor aware that you stopped taking it?
