Lyrica And Osteoarthritis

Updated

I have used 150mg per day for six months, to deal with osteoarthritis in the hip. I moved from Oxycontin to Lyrica, and am satisfied with this decision. My hip replacement is pending within the next month or so. Lyrica is so effective in stopping the pain, I am wondering whether to stay on it, and keep pushing off the operation.
The side effects that I have encountered are short term memory loss, decrease in stool volume and constipation. It is even hard to fart...perhaps it effects sphincter muscles in the body. I have put 8kg on since I began using lyrica, and I was initially alarmed when I developed trigger finger in all of my knuckles. I suffer from anxiety and depression, so was interested to see what the mood stabilizing aspect of the drug did. The depression is still there, but anxiety has been effectively reduced. Sleep is better than it used to be.
To summarize, it is a miracle drug that blocks the pain from my hip. yes, I still limp, and cannot run, or anything amazing like that, but it lets you get on with life.

I am so glad that it's working so well for you.

As to the hip replacement, yes if you can wait longer, then it's usually good to do so, but check with your doctor and make sure there aren't any other reasons you need to have it done now. But artificial joints do have a limited life span, because of the wear and tear our bodies put on them and so far, we've just not managed to come up with anything as efficient and long lasting as our natural body parts, thus, depending on how young you are, you could end up needing it replaced again in another 15 years, or so.

Is there anything else I can help with?

As a matter of fact, yes there is.
I have read that Welbrutin XL is a complimentary drug to Lyrica that assists in the depression side of things, along with suppressing the lyrica induced extra appetite.
What do you think?
Also, the trigger finger was alarming when it first began, I am used to it now. Is there a medical term for this, what causes it and where can i learn more about it?

I feel exactly the same. I am using Wellbutrin to try and curb the weight gain, as recommended in this forum. I am only 15 days on it, so I cannot report on its desired effect. Lyrica certainly alters your metabolism and the dry mouth at night can cause
gum disease if you don't check it with occasional mouth wash. I am 60 yrs old.
