Yes, they can still write them, but most prefer not to do so. It is felt that by having people see a pain management specialist, it will help curb improper prescribing and over prescribing. If a PCP prescribes something like this, it will most likely be scrutinized and they will have to have very good reason for doing so.
Exceptions are made, however, for people that suffer possibly terminal conditions that cause intractable pain, such as stage 4 cancer.
The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
