Long Term Use Of Atenolol (Page 2)

Updated

Eight years back, while commuting to my workplace (40 km's away) by a train, I suddenly got fatigued and caught a blackout while getting up from my seat. A friend of mine immediately rushed me to a nearby Doctor, who after checking my BP (180/120) prescribed Atenolol and some sedatives to me He said that I have to take Atenolol for whole life, and I am following the same. Will somebody guide me, whether I am doing the right thing or must I take a second opinion now after getting checked my heart's functioning. I don't have any trouble with my heart but if anyday due to oversight I forget to take the medicine, I feel uneasiness in my head. I feel I have become addictive to this drug. Please help.

I am 52 and have been on Atenolol 50 mg. 1x a day along with Triamterene-HCTZ 37.5 -25mg 1x a day for 20 + yrs.. Have also had cough for years. I can't enjoy a laugh otherwise or I literally choke to death. I have tingling in my hands. If I have to write anything my hands go completey numb. I have pins and needles in hands and feet. Hairloss, ringing in the ears ocsassionally, cholesterol levels are high, acid reflux, fatigue, blurry vision, dizziness upon changing positions whether standing or sitting, unstable at times when walking, trouble sleeping or staying asleep at night, nightmares, cold hands and feet, sweatiness, no libido, constipation, depression. I'm sure there are other symptons I am forgetting right now. I have been looking on internet at other peoples issues and found that several other people are experiencing same issues. I thought this was because I'm aging. When I talked to my doc she denies that the med's have any correlation to my symptons. So frustrated with the medical field. They as well as the pharmaceutical industry do not have your best intrest at heart. My daughter tells me that I must watch out for myself. My best advise to us all who are victims of being on med's that cause more problems than our original issue {for me..hypertension}, don't quite looking for the truth. Keep asking questions and don't let anyone tell you "it's all in your head". You gotta do what's right for you. Don't just put your life in someone else's hands. Take control of your life and health. Keep challenging your doctor as well as the pharmacist. If you have symptons, get something new!!!

You need to see another doctor and get a second opinion. I was on Atenolol for 11 years and suffered from a good majority of those symptoms you describe at times... especially numbness in hands / fingers / feet, dizziness when changing positions from sitting / standing, acid reflux, blurry vision, extreme sensitivity to cold in hands / feet, etc. I have not experienced any of those symptoms since switching to Norvasc. In fact... all of these symptoms went away within a day or two of stopping Atenolol. It is definitely worth looking into further!

If your hypertension is from weight gain, when you lose some pounds, then your BP should go down. But if your family tree has hypertension in it, then you may be on BP meds for the rest of your life. They are all usually generic, so less expensive to take. But, they all have side effects. Usually if one med bothers you more, your Dr can change to some other med. But as you take any medication for a long time or at increasing dosages, the side effects become more pronounced. A good Dr will work with you, to get a medication that works best for you.

Iam aged about 57 years. 15 years back I I was having a problem of more heart beats above 100 beats per minute. Doctor prescribed Propronolol 40 mg. Then my heart beat was normal. After 5 years I was having irregular heart beats, Skipped & missed heart beats. Some time I feel my heart stops beating. At that time I feel that I may die. I am very much worrying for this irregular heart beats. I was having B.P. of 13/90. Doctor prescribed Atenlol 25. Then for the last 5 years I am using Aten 50 mg to control my B.P. and Irregular heart beats. My B.P & heart beats were in control. Now for the last 2 months again I am facing Irregular heart beats & missed heart beats. Doctor prescribed daily 2 Tablets to use Aten 50 mg ( Morning 1 Tablet and evening 1 tablet). Now I am worrying for using 100 mg of Atenlol daily. Now I am not facing any irregular heart beats.Whether I have to increase the dosage to control Irregular heart beats ? Is there any problems for using Atenlol 100mg daily. Kindly advice & help to control my health problem. I am praying God to help.

I have taken atenolol for 30 years for hypertension & serious migraine. I also take armour thyroxine because it is thought that an auto immune disease seriously damaged my own thyroidThe atenolol protects my heart from an excess of thyroxine.I am intolerant of milk & wheat/gluten.
A year ago my pulse began to get slower. The Dr said I should gradually stop the atenolol. I had become sensitised/allergic to it. It took me along time to come off. I found it made it harder to focus & I felt stressed & jittery. I would like to ask if anyone else has experienced this & what advice would they have to offer?i need control of my BP also my migraines.

I have been taking atenolol for 14 years. Last week a new dr took me off and changed me to lisinoprol. 4 days after stopping atenolol, I was in the ER with a resting pulse way over 100 and up to 140. The ER dr put me back on atenolol and I am following up with a cardiologist. I would advise to always get a 2nd opinion.

I have been on Atenolol since 2004. I have had a cough for a long time. At least 3 years. It has gotten so bad the last 2 months my medical dr has given me antibiotics 3 times and 3 different ones. Nothing touches the cough. Could it be from the Atenolol?

You really need to do your HOMEWORK on meds. Check to see if taking the meds will cause Liver/Kidney Disease. Make your DR sit down with you and explain the precautions or better still as your Pharmacist, they will be more than happy to assist. God Bless

This is the worst medicine ever. All antihypertensive drugs are bad, but this one is especially bad. I took Atenolol for 12 years I was put on it unnecessarily when I was a teenager and I am forever cursed. I stopped taking it and ALL other antihypertensive drugs two years ago (as they finally figured out I don't actually have hypertension). Guess what? I'm still dealing with all the injuries that drug caused me. I suffer from breathing problems, which I didn't hAve, obesity (which I didn't have), thyroid and reproductive system problems (which I didn't have). I recommend you ask your doctor to get you off of that drug. If he or she refuses, find another doctor. That is a really, really bad drug. It is no longer considered first line of treatment for hypertension.
If you think I'm making this up, there's is actually a study done by the National Institute of Medicine of theverything US that talks about the negative side effects of antihypertensive drugs (meaning, all of them) on your endocrine and your reproductive system. Listen to me, that drug is a deadly trap.

I have been on 100mg of Atenolol for 8 yrs. I learned of this evil drug a yr ago and experienced the palpations when I ran out, scarring me! I am a 57 yr old man, obease and diabetic. I have read that Atenolol raises blood sugar and also blood pressure. Refuse the daily intake by half for a month then a quarter
Etc.Google youngevity products. Cbd extract, carnavora, and yoga breathing techniques. There are herbal alternatives! Good luck!

Diet and exercise can normally control blood pressure...,I have been on atenolol for about 12 years. Diet and exercise - losing weight - has enabled me to start coming off the medicine... I truly believe that if the average person would eat right and exercise- simply walk at least 3 days a week - there would not be such a need for medication and he/she would not have to deal with the usual (sometimes severe) side effects, which often presents a need for another medication to take care of side effects... Medicine (prescription drugs) is big business and the more people have to take the more prosperous the drug industry becomes.... I'm not opposing medication...I am thankful for it...it definitely can save lives ... Simply saying we should do all we can not to have to take so much of it.... And of course prayer helps with all sickness and disease....

Diabetes/ high blood sugar - If your feet are hurting, or tingling, you have probably had Type 2 diabetes already for a while. Go to the doctor. Quit eating all sugar, which is hard to do. Cut down to just a little sweet fruit.
