Lamictin 25 - Weight Gain?

I'm diagnosed as having Bipolar 2. I take Lamictin 25 - 1x tablet twice a day, Trepiline - 2x tablet @night, Dopaquel - 1x @night, Escitalopram - 1.5 in the morning, Urbanol - 2x tablets a day. I'm trying to loose about 5kg. I'm watching my eating habits & I use my Orbitrack 3x a day for 30 minutes. I have not lost 1kg in 2weeks. Does that make sense? I have been told that the problem could be the Lamictin. I'm not sure if it could be that or a combination of the tablets. Please let me know what you think?

Hi Betty,

Sorry to hear about your challenges with weight while taking this medication. From what I could gather, weight gain isn't something that's generally associated with Lamictin (lamotrigine).

The Lamotrigine Details drug article actually shows 'weight loss' listed as a potential side effect; not weight gain... So I can only speculate that this may be attributed to one of your other medications.

Have you recently had any problems with indigestion while taking Lamictin? I'm only asking because indigestion is also listed as a possible side effect that could inadvertently contribute to some weight gain. If this happens to be the case, digestive enzymes and/or probiotics would probably be of great benefit.

Escitalopram on the other hand, does in fact show weight gain listed as a relatively common side effect (effecting virtually 1 to 10% of patients) on the Escitalopram Details page.

Trepiline (Amitriptyline) is one other medication with similar side effects that you may want to watch out for. Its list of possible side effects also includes 'changes in one's appetite and/or weight'.

After seeing the details on the last two medications I mentioned, I think the odds of Lamictin causing the weight problem seem to be far off in comparison to Escitalopram and Trepiline.

Hopefully this info helps offer some additional insight on other possible influences. I wish you all the best in reaching your goals!
