Is Toradol Related To Pheonthiazines
UpdatedI was recently hospitalized for a bowel resection and given toradol for pain, I became confused and almost paranoid and also developed urinary retention. I had been given phenotiazine related drugs before and developed these same symptoms and wondered if there were a connection. I also had difficulty walking alone, was very unsteady on my feet to the point that I had a bed alarm applied to my bed. I have almost no memory of this hospital stay and have received most information from my husband and sisters again a similar connection to the other experience. I had a dilaudid pca also but rarely used this according to my famioly who were with me at all times except from about 10 pm to8 am. I do remember being very upset about the bed alarm and also once after asking for a sleeping pill and being treated rudely. The morning after the sleeping pill event I told my husband this nurse had been murdered in my room by some unkown person. Just an example of my wierd behaviour. I am an RN and had worked in this hospital for 23 years before my retirement and love the staff and the hospital and felt very confidant and safe going there for surgery.

As a critical -care nurse, I would guess that your hallucinations and restlessness were most likely from your dilaudid pca which may have had a baseline dosage delivering continually, despite the fact that you were not using it often. Toradol has been used for years without this type of side effect, and is considered to be similar in effect to NSAIDs. The biggest problem with Toradol has been it's effect on the platelets and predisposing the patient to bleed if kept on it more than a few days.
The PCA dilaudid did not have a basal dose it was only used if I pushed the button and as I said everyone said I wasn't using it at all in their presence. In fact I did not appear to be in pain or complaining of any pain.
Patty, were you on any other medications?
As was already stated, Toradol is not related to that medication class, it is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory. Its typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach irritation, and increased risk of bleeding.
If you had surgery, it is possible that you may have experienced these symptoms due to the anesthesia. Anesthetics are well known to cause these types of symptoms in some people, especially when coupled with other after surgical medications.
