Is 50mg Tramadol As Effective 10mg Methadone

@mark,
According to a double-blind clinical trial, Tramadol was reported to be more efficacious in managing the symptoms of opioid withdrawal (and with fewer side effects) than Methadone. This study is based on a 450 mg/day dose of Tramadol in comparison to a 15mg/day dose of Methadone. So if you ask me, my thoughts are that 50mgs of Tramadol wouldn't have results that are as significant as what was displayed in the clinical trials, since that would only amount to 200-300mgs a day (when taken every 4-6 hours) as opposed to 450mg/day.
Results will probably also depend on each individuals tolerance to pain meds as well as body chemistry and several other underlying factors. I'd encourage you to talk with your doctor and see what he/she thinks for a second opinion.
Hope this helps!
does tramadol have any value compared to methadone as a good pain reliever?
There will probably be several mixed opinions to that question since everyone reacts and responds differently to different dosages/medications. And finding an equivalent dose for pain relief is something that should be professionally assessed by your doctor. I can say however that other feedback I've come across from those who have tried both, does lead me to believe that 50mg of tramadol is probably "nearly" as effective as 10mg of methadone in terms of analgesic effects.
Reason I say this is because patients in another thread stated that they were on 20mg of methadone and replaced it with 100-150mg of tramadol to comfortably manage their condition. In retrospect this would translate to 50-75mg of tramadol relative to 10mg of methadone. But like I said, everyone is different. Tramadol does seem to hold value at higher dosages... but in lower amounts, my opinion is that methadone may be a more viable option.
Does anyone else have thoughts on this?
I have chronic pain from spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, etc., and have been taking tramadol since about 2009, at first it was great because it worked, I only had to take the minimum dose, and it did not cause any weirdness, loopiness, etc. But within the last 2-3 years generic manufacturers have been putting out a substandard tramadol which has been causing a new set of side effects including depression, anxiety, odd thoughts, feelings of anger/animosity, etc., and requires more for pain relief. But if generic manufacturers are severely cutting corners, substituting ingredients, becoming careless and producing one substandard product, the others are probably substandard too. My brother was injured multiple times on the job, with only 2 of the incidences, falling 60 feet through galley chains, and before that he was run over by a construction vehicle, he suffered broken, jaw, shoulder, collar bone, arm, knee, ribs, and some internal injuries, so he had chronic pain and took, primarily, Vicodin for the pain. He was switched to the generic, hydrocodone, which worked OK at first. About 3-4 years ago, overnight, it changed. The generic starting causing him to have depression, and he had to go from 1 or 2 every 4 to 6 hours, to having to take double the dose, for it to remove enough of the pain so he could be able to function. Even though he can barely afford it he had to go back to Brand to get back on safer doses. So if the tramadol was being produced the way it was originally formulated you might have had good results, but the way it is today, it's doubtful.
I agree about generic brand not working as effectively after you've been taking branded medication!! I have been taking OxyContin and OxyNorm for a number of years for chronic pain. Initially there was no alternative, but in the last couple of years many generic brands became available in the UK. I was mostly dispensed generic from my regular pharmacy and I was in so much pain! In the end I went back to my GP and requested that the branded version was put on my script, so that that was what the pharmacy had to supply. I spoke to a pharmacist at work, and asked if I was going mad during this period of time because I thought that generic must be the same as branded because of the oxycodone content being the same surely. The way he explained it was that, although the active ingredient may be the same, there are differences in the way that the drug is delivered, because the 'recipe' will never be the same for each drug. He said that my body had been used to receiving the drug in a certain way, and that the generic drugs delivery system clearly just didn't suit me. I went back onto branded medication, and my pain was again well controlled.
I've been off methadone 10mg daily for a week... have some Vicodin left to take to help with withdrawal but will be done in one more day with them so how bad is the withdrawal going be?? It's already been terrible
My boyfriend passed away on 12-7-16. He had been on oxycodone and oxycontin. They took him off and put him on methadone. 1 year and 4 months of sheer hell. He gained 125 lbs. That's always good for pain. He asked for help to lose the weight...they blatantly ignored his requests. In Maine the DHS regulation has gone to dropping everyone to the equivalent of 100 mg morphine. Kevin was on opiates 18 years. He was on 240 mg of oxycodone and oxycontin and I call it murder. He suffered so. The doctors denied him even gaining the weight. I could not believe what I was witnessing. This whole opiate epidemic is bulls***. Its genocide. The only difference between Nazi Germany and now is they wrap drugs in perfect little packages as your choice of treatment for pain that just happen to eventually change brain chemistry..emotional destitution..physical deterioration and death. Its a cheap way for our government to control the population. The epidemic started a very long time ago. The American people need to wake up to the bulls*** the FDA works. It's time for revolutionary change. We need to get off our asses and stand up to fight for these people who have become addicts because of federal and local governments pushing papers..kissing each others asses and lets not forget the pillow talk. Yup... I just said all that.
Re: JB (# 7)
Terrible. You need to reduce dosage once a month by 1/4 per month. Then same with vicodin. Even after 2 months you'll still "have the flu" for a period of time 1 we or more.
Re: Rahel (# 8)
I totally agree! The pharmaceutical money that empowers our gov. is enough to make you sick. One wonders if gov. is trying to de-populate the world with drugs, but then again make you suffer after becoming addicted and not by choice. The ones addicted are the ones with their eyes wide open and woke up to reality.
May God bless your brother and you for what you have been through. God has givin you eyes to really see, and ears to hear. If only others could be blessed to realize the truth as you have. Peace be with you.?
