Hello, Anna! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having.
If you require such a medication on a long-term ongoing basis, you'll need to see a specialist, a general practice physician won't be able to prescribe it for you. Thus, for anxiety treatment, you'll need to see a psychiatrist.
Xanax is a benzodiazepine that's most commonly used to treat anxiety and nervous disorders. It carries the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability.
Since it is a controlled substance that is frequently abused, you also just can't really go to a doctor and ask for it. You'll need to set up an appointment, make sure they get a full copy of your current medical records and then discuss your treatment options, while at the appointment.
Can anyone recommend a good doctor in that area?
Do you currently have a PCP that might be able to refer you to someone?
yes I do have a PCP but I also have had 4 back surgeries and got addicted to painkillers in the last 12 years but I've been clean off painkillers for 3 years my problem is chronic anxiety and I feel like I'm being punished because of my past addiction so they won't give me anything so I'm looking for a doctor that will not penalize me for having an addiction problem on opiates before so I am so desperate to find someone here so can washington a doctor that I could go to that will listen to what I have to say and then not use my past addiction against me. Also I lost my husband a year ago suddenly and unexpectedly and I've dealt with that and I'm moving on with my life I just can't handle the severe anxiety that I said I seem to be having and I don't know what to do and no matter where I turn nobody seems to be able to help me
What else have you tried for your anxiety?
It's been found that many antidepressants, such as Prozac, work quite well for it and, rather than taking them as needed, you take them regularly to keep your condition under control. It is an SSRI, so its typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache and weight loss.
I've rarely seen a vindictive doc, especially one of us. (I'm a shrink.) Not nowadays. It shouldn't have come as a great shock for your doc to one day realize you were addicted to the narcotics used in the aftermath of your "precipitating event". I've found the best med for your type of Anxiety Disorder (probably GAD) is Klonopin. It's stronger than Valium (not that anyone can FIND therapeutically equivalent generic Diazepam); has a long half-life and, most of all it works. Xanax is a short-acting med. I used to take it for GAD and Panic Attack Disorder. Several times, being a doc shopping in the neighborhood or working at my hospital saved the day when I realized I didn't have that second dose of Xanax. My local pharmacist would "spot" be a Klonopin and deduct 1 pill from my next script and I've been arid a while and could find a Xanax somewhere or write a script for one of my assistants. Not a problem anymore and its great sleep aid at 2-3mg qHS. Hopes this helps. Do you have any other MDs you're "close with" who could provide a positive record to a shrink. Shrinks have always been granted greater leeway in prescribing Controlle Substances than "other docs," but a lot of my New Boys (I'm Exec Director of Psych, Residencies and Fellowships) are scared. I can't say, "No problem; it's never been for me, so go for it." They don't have sisters who served as the largest DA's office in our city as a Bureau Chief or Executive Assistant DA; they haven't testified for the People in what seems to be hundreds of Sex Crime cases. Sometimes I'll use MY script and write whatever the Resident in question wanted. If you're anxious enough for long-term courses of benzodiazepine tx, ANY reputable shrink's Dx and Tx should be honored.

Effexor, Celexa and Lexapro, along with Zoloft have had good outcomes when prescribed for anxiety.
I dislike long-distance DDX, but you have developed a Phobia secondary to your physical pain. Both need to be treated. I practice in an upper-class area of Long Island., but I've sent my Residents and Fellows on rotations to less affluent areas and they tell me, "Dr Joey, you'd never call a patient's kid a 'F***ing Junkie," would you? (And within both their hearing!) Well, maybe if I realized he's stolen 10 Official NYS Rx (valid for ANY drug) Pads, I might lose my temper and fly off the handle, but I wasn't reared to describe people that way. It dehumanizes them. When docs in pain clinics use such language because they know they can get away with it — these folks need their Methadone maintenance or their OXYCODONE, etc., simply to function. I've gone "undercover" with one of my Pain Management buddies and busted a whole mess of so-called physicians and NPs or PAs. or "inappropriate and derogatory remarks to or about patients" — if the facility is in one of our large KONGLOMERATES, they're toast. As The Batman always says, "This is the first time you'd been caught, you mean!" I do not believe in the Disease Model of Substance Abuse, but I do believe it's a psych disorder or illness, whether accidentally caused by 8-12 weeks on M.S. because of an accident or as the result of teen-age drug experimentation. I don't get a chance to see as many patients now as I'd like...never wanted to be an administrator, just to make the world a better place, but in Psychiatry, you have to be in charge in order to do that. I'm grateful to God that He gave me a good enough brain to fly through my MD, PhD and Residency/Fellowship Programs and having made enough friends to get where I wanted to be.
