Hello, Anita! How is your husband doing?
If he has been taking it for years, then it would be normal to have withdrawal effects, if he tries to stop suddenly. A slow tapering is usually best, to prevent him from feeling the withdrawal symptoms.
Has he consulted his doctor? They should be able to help him set up a good and safe tapering schedule. Usually, the modern method is to have the person start skipping days, like taking it every other day for a week, then skipping every 2 days and so on.
