How Long Does It Take Paxil To Work
UpdatedI'm switching from zoloft to paxil. I was feeling very bad on zoloft. I'm still on zoloft as my psychiatrist is tapering me off of it by having me cut from 100 to 50 mg for 14 days and then that's it. I've been on the paxil for three days. How long will it take for the paxil to start overcoming the bad side effects and withdrawal of zoloft?

Hello, Keithman! How are you?
About 2 to 3 weeks and perhaps a month, before it reaches its full efficacy level in your body.
Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, weight changes and dry mouth.
Is there anything else I can help with?
Its probably too late but it has become more apparent that Paxil can be problematic for alot. Includimg myself. I have been on it for 2 months and I started on 20mg and after a week I was to up it to 40mg. Well for some reason I waited cause I was a little gun shy. ( i waited almost 3 weeks) After day 3 on 40mg s*** hit the fan im my brain. I had a major interaction that... long story short I was getting a release of too much serotonin. I was suicidal, cried non stop for no apparent reason, impulsive, insomnia for 7 days, I would go into a rage at the smallest trigger. It was horrible. I should have been committed but was refusing but my wife put me back on 40 and I got some anxiety meds and a couple of buddies to help with everything and went to the doc after 3 days of this craziness. Now its been a week and I believe my doc made a mistake on my tapering. Took me to 10 mg in 2 days then 5 mg after 2 more and skipped one day completely and 5 more the next then none. Now its been 2 days since no paxil and im having VIVID HORRIBLE nightmares and multiple withdrawl symptoms. Got up after one tonight and done some reading by a Harvard doc and the tapper should have been at least a couple months to my understanding. Out of all anti-deppressants Paxil has virtually no half life meaning the drug is out of your system much much faster than all others will cause the withdrawls and probs im having ( in a nutshell)Probably will start a low dose tomorrow and call a different doc that has more experience in this field. Just be very very careful and be aware of the risks that I was NEVER explained. Coming off this stuff has been reference to H withdrawls except paxil last much longer and some side effects between differ but people struggle for months to get off and stay off. Even if it works I would consider a different one! Good luck!!
Thanks for the info. I've been on Paxil for about four weeks now. The Zoloft is out of my system and I'm doing good and feel good on Paxil. I asked my psychiatrist to up the dosage because of withdraw from Zoloft. So he upped it to 40 mg and I'm doing really good on that. The only side effect is dryness, but I've been making sure to hydrate myself. I was having trouble with going to the bathroom a lot, but that has pretty much subsided and I think it my have been due to the anxiety of changing meds. Thinks look pretty good. Of course I have my ups and downs with anxiety and depression but things seem to be evening out and I feel a lot more stable and have more good days. I'm keeping busy and also have group therapy once a week and that really helps.
