How Long Does It Take Gabapentin To Get Out Of Your System (Page 2) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI was taking 300 mg neurontin. 1 in am, 1 at noon and 2 at bedtime. I was prescribed the med in May of 2013. Increased later when not helping with foot numbness. It has been almost 2 weeks since i tapered myself off of the drug and i still feel nausea in the am which affects my eating. Please advise how long it will take this med to be out of my system? Thank you.
Yes. I had crying spells. Now I'm just a b"""h. Everything gets on my nerves! Its like it turned me into the opposite of myself. I'm never happy, and impatient and hate everything. But the worst is my head and stomach. It Sux!
Allen ~ I assume your off GABA by now!! Maybe this will help someone else.
Yes, I had crying, major mood spikes, major irritability, can't sleep, feel manic, nausea..... I was taking for MS. 12 years on Neurotin. They started me on 3000mg daily!!!! Yup you heard right!!
I've since been told it should never be prescribed over 4000mg daily. I am a small frame person.
I became suicidal. That's all I thought about 24-7!!
After several months I finally got into a MS clinic at a major University in my area. The new Neuro lowered the dose!!! So I went down to 1200mg daily for 9-1/2 years. I am now on 600mg daily. It has stopped having any effect for me. I actually started today July 13, 2015 going off of it.
DO NOT go off cold turkey. Tapper the dose slowly. Your doctor can help with that!!! It helps with the sides effects not being as bad, plus you can have seizures.
I will admit the med was helping after taking the lower amount for sensory issues with the MS and some with the Fibromyalgia. Stats show it only helps around 10% of people with Fibro. I wouldn't try it with those low odds!! This is a older drug, and has its place for "some" people. Go on very slow dose to start, and as low amount as possible if anyone decides to use it. Remember everyone reacts differently to drugs etc.... With 2-diseases with no cure in site I feel like a genie pig and a some doc's love throwing drugs at people!!
Blessings to all ~ whatever path you may be traveling!
Hi Diana and thanks, I'm really sorry you're going through this. God bless you. No Im still on this drug I've been tapering off it since 2/2015. My doc put me on lexapro to help with the depression and those crazy crying spells now I have 2 drugs to withdraw from. Im only taking 1200mg of neurontin a day now but I'm still walking around in this crazy fog, and sometime I don't know what is real. It is mind blowing. I'm still taking magnesium bath, that helps. I heard it take some people 1 year to begin to feel better from this very evil drug, so I'm going to just be patient and try not to fight this process because darkness has an ending. Thanks for sharing, it was helpful. And may God keep you here with us and lets stay in touch
I have been taking this medicine (Gabapentin) for more than three years 2 - 300mg at bedtime and I've been in a nightmare for the last 2 years. It make me feel better knowing that it's not me but the medicine because i thought i was going crazy. This crap almost cost me my marriage.
I agree. I was given this medication for my back pain. I was taking it at bedtime for about a month. I also had to stop taking it. I've had terrible headaches and my head just doesn't feel right. I can't wait for this to clear out of my system. Only been a few days since I stopped taking it and I'm still feeling the effects. I can't wait to feel normal again.
MomzOr, How could you start On 50mg. They only come in 100 mg cap. Are you sure your talking about the same medication?
Diana, I hope you are doing as well as possible. yes I'm still tapering off this med, I'm also taking lexapro it really helps a lot with all of the withdrawal systems that comes with neurontin, now I have to withdraw from this drug, that should be fun too. I'm gonna stay on the 600mg a day of neurontin til December and then go down to 550 I'm gonna go very slow because this is a very angry drug. I'm not jerking as much, the crying went a way thanks to the lexapro so that's cool,,but I'm still walking around in this fog, hope it's not the norm now. I'm also Vegan and that helps a lot. I'm really looking forward to that day when we are free from these meds. I'm back in the Gym and that's helps a lot. If the antidepressants starts to help a little bit, start moving your body as soon as you start feeling better, and start sweating the meds out and then take a magnesium bath it seems to help with these crazy withdrawals. What a ride and I can't wait to get off never felt like this, but just know it will get better just gonna take a while that's all. It's war and you have to fight. Hope this helped a little. I'm really going to be praying for you Diana. Hey God, Please remove these spirits of sickness from our bodies, put them some place else. Lets stay in contact.
I've been weaning my way off this neurontin since 2/2015. I feel better but I still feel like a stranger in my own head, just does not feel right. Just always know it's gonna get better. It took a while for us to get like this and it's gonna take a while for us to feel like our self. One guy said it took him a year to get back right, so we are going to have to be patient on this trip ride.
Hi there I felt the same too coming off Gaba . I was on 1400mg four times a day and over time went down to 300 x 3 a day then the same as you 100 down and then off . It has now been 8 days and I feel terrible . Sweating and coughing and my chest feels ratterly and nausea too. I thought I was going to feel great but I don't . Hopefully soon I will.
Good luck to everyone who's coming off or come of these meds or any meds . Let us hope for a pain free world.
I stopped taking this med when I got a very bad cold and started taking other cold medicines and didn't want to have interactions. Within days I started to feel awful anxiety and didn't understand why. I couldn't sleep and I just wanted to die. I then came on this blog and understood what was happening to me! I've being off the meds now for 2 weeks and after reading all the comments will not be taking it again. Thank you all for sharing and helping me understand
I was taking 900mg per day for a chronic neuropathic cough for over 10 years. It was the only medication that controlled the cough allowing me to teach. Side effects for me were weight gain and not being able to lose weight. Of course as a female the biggest problem was loss off any libido. My blood test results also showed really high cholesterol levels as well as other areas of concern. I finally tapered myself off the meds this past summer after a blood test shows my total cholesterol was 324. It's been 6 months, no coughing! cholesterol down to 296 and I've lost 15 pounds and my hubby is happy again.
Hi...I have been taking 900 mg. a day since 2008. I am now on day 12 cold turkey. I really didn't have a choice, as my prescriptions are delivered, and it was held up over the holidays in the mail. My last dose was 600 mg. on Christmas Eve. I have run the gambit with this withdrawal...from crying spells, muscle spasms, joint pain so bad I couldn't get out of bed, upset stomach and nausea, and finally...not being able to sleep, even though I am exhausted. I would have preferred to taper it off, but I didn't have a choice. The pills were delivered today. As I am already through the worst, I hope...I am going to return them. I was prescribed the Neurontin for pain from abdominal adhesions. I truly don't think that it has ever really helped me, so I'm going to say goodbye to taking any more.
Helpful, that is not true that it is all in the head. I cannot believe a licensed physician would prescribe 20 any strength capsules a day. Sorry to say but I think you need help. Don't judge people and their reaction to medications. You are no physician.
Hello! Sorry for all the problems. I am Prior Respiratory Therapist and a Psychology Major at University of Tenn. I was placed on this medication for having Neuropothy in my feet, due to a torn Plantar Fascia. My hands and feet began to swell, to a capacity of being unable to grasp or place my shoe on my left foot and utilize my crutches. This analgesic has MANY side effects, too many to list. When trying to " wean" yourself, consult your physician! Do not "cold turkey!". Tapering off is best. Also, take 10 mg of Magnesium. Magnesium connects to the brain chemical receptor that is the same receptor as Gaba connects to, as well. Before doing anything, as always, consult your physician!
Yes this is how I feel also! I stopped taking it 1 week ago. It was absolutely horrible and I was only taking it 5 weeks! I feel no one understands how I'm feeling. I'm so happy to read this.
I was prescribed gabepentin to address nerve pain and tremors associated with lupus and fibromyalgia. So I was on the lowest possible dose (100 mg) of this drug for 2 days while I was ramping up to a therapeutic dose. The night of the second dose I had the most violent and horrific dreams. I woke up on day 3 weeping, with the most bizarre thoughts I have ever had (burning all my clothes and an overwhelming concern that I was going to hurt my dog - both of these are completely atypical thoughts and 100% out of character for me). I wanted to hurt myself and went as far as striking myself in the head several times. My husband and I are both in social services and were able to create a safety plan. I went to sleep and slept for 10 hours and woke up feeling physically awful but the strange, uncharacteristic thoughts were gone. It's been about 24 hours since then and I still have a wretched headache and feel nauseous. How long does this drug take to cycle out of your system? I know that I was on a really low dose and not for long but I feel miserable, more miserable than normal, which stinks.
Hi. The medicine leaves your system completely in a day or two. But the withdrawals can last for weeks months or you may not get any at all. Good luck. Sometimes Drs will increase it a little. When I got down to 100mg every other day all hell broke out. Before that I was fine. Now I take 100 mg every night and I'm good. Staying on it for a month then going to try again. Don't forget this medicine messes with your brain
I would call the doctor to let them know whats going on...This is a very powerful drug even in low dosages
So sorry you had such an awful experience with this med and hope you feel better soon. I have taken this med for five years without difficulty but people react differently.
