I have been taking 2mg twice a day for 12 years coming this Feb. 2014. I want to get off of them and with all I have read, I'm scared. I have a wonderful Pain management Doctor and he is awear of this, infact he brought it up and I have not been ready and with all I have read makes me even more nervous about weiming off the Adivan after all I have read. What is the least painful way to weim off this drug with the least amount of withdraw symptoms? Thank you kindly.

Isn't adivan for anxiety? I used to take xanax for anxiety. When I stopped taking them, I got the shakes and a headache for a few days but that's it. It was nothing that I couldn't handle.

Ativan is considered the hardest drug to get off of it causes a lot of withdrawal if not done right. I would try to taper yourself off by weekly decreasing by 0.25mg. Example if ur on 2mg 1x daily try 0.75 mg for at least a WK. See how u feel then continue. If your anxiety is bother u stay on another wk before moving to 0.50 mg daily

Hi Shelby. Yes Lorazepam is an extremely difficult drug to ween yourself off. Switch to Diazepam as the half life is long. It will help with the nasty withdrawals. I agree with the others that have stated cutting down on the Lorazepam, get yourself on a strict program to lower the dosage, but don't rush it, take your time. 6 weeks until you get to 0.25mg. Then have the Diazepam to cope. Only take this when you feel the withdrawal is too intense. You may want to follow Professor Ashton's program. Good luck.

Very very slowly to no have withdrawal effects. Ativan is the sister drug to Xanax. I have been on Xanax now for 7 years. 3 mg a day sometimes 4 or 5 if I'm having a lot of stress and have break through panic attacks. Ask your doctor to give you the same amount of medicine but use smaller dosed pills. Like if you use 1mg at a time three times a day ask him to change your pills to .5 mg and get 180 pills and take 2 at a time and when you feel relaxed try to cut one of the .5 mg pills in half that way you take .75 instead of a full mg. then once you can every day doing that method at least once try twice a day then all three times. Once you have that and no problems then go to one pill once a day and .75 your other two doses. You should get the idea now. Then when you get down to .25 mg 3 times - day and are stable and no withdrawal then cut down to twice a day and if that don't work cut the .25 in half once a day and work down from there until eventually you'll be down to a .25 once a day. Then every other day then three days then you should be clean and able to finish and stop completely. Yes it will take a while but omg so much better than withdrawal. I ended up in ER with seizures and muscle tremors all over because my doctor was in a bad mood and I made him mad when I had to remind him after over a year who I was and having to go in to get refills once a month and he got embarrassed and blew up and started yelling at me and refused me of all my medications. Fool dang near killed me. So slow and steady. Even if you take a year to wean off you are still taking less and less and you will reach your goal relatively withdrawal free.

Sounds extreme, but I went to a Detox Center for 4 days so they could safely get me off of adivan. There was a doctor on staff 24/7 and nurses who took my vitals every two hours. I was given a "cocktail" of various meds to keep me comfortable while coming off the drug. Best way to do it in my opinion.

Almost identical situation happened with my doctor. I went in for refills and he slammed my folder down and said what are youu doing here again. I said well you are the one that said I had to come in so you could check for abuse to get my next months refills. Must have pissed him off even more than he was when he came the examine room. He slammed my file shut and refused any of my medications and said go to the psychologist for my panic and anxiety meds and I asked about what about the rest of my meds. He said well yelled FIND A NEW FU##ING DOCTOR and stormed out. I was left jaw hanging wide open. And 11 days later also with 220/190 bloop pressure seizures, muscle spasms, hallucinations, cold sweats, and the doctors said most likely I was a pill seeker when he prescribed them to me to begin with in the beginning. Ugh. I hate doctors.

Wow! I totally agree doctors don't know a dam thing about benzo withdrawerl,I have been trying to get off benzos for 12 years off and on off and on.I was cold turkey once and had a grand mall siezer once,dam doctor almost killed me,I'm trying again w phenobarbatial.these pills are evil and will kill you.goog luck! Don't abruptly stop taking the Ativan . Reduce your dosage by 1mg or .5 for a couple of weeks. If you go cold turkey you might seize. I did this and I have an addictive personality. Ativan changed me so much that I had no expression on my face and was very reclusive.(would not drive because it was raining). I would greatly suggest that you have your Dr. prescribe lexapro( which comes in generic). Start on a low dosage and work your way up. The first week you will feel tired etc. while you are weaning yourself off of the Ativan. Give the Lexapro about 2-3 months to get into your system well. I only take 10 mg a day.
