How Long After You Take Suboxone Can A Pain Pill Be Felt
(Newest replies first)

Someone I know took one sliver of a suboxone, but had never taken it before. It was to help them get through a day without pain meds. How long till they can take a 30mg dose of regular medication for pain relief?

What others are saying about the Naloxone is wrong. It has absolutely no effect or absorption unless injected. It is only fused into Suboxone to prevent user from abusing the drug by injecting it. When taken orally it does not get absorbed. The buprenorphine in the Suboxone is what is blocking your opiate receptors. It doesn't quite fit as well as a regular opiate which is why you don't feel high but do not have withdraw symptoms. It takes about 48-72 hours before the buprenorphine leaves your system to a point where opiates can have an effect again.

You can read about this from the Suboxone website here (scroll to the second page): naabt.org/documents/COWS_Induction_flow_sheet.pdf

Hi. I've been in similar predicaments before. If I were closer I'd like to help. Here's what I know about subs though: subs are a combination of buprenorphine, an opiate and naloxone, which blocks opiates. Buprenorphine is a strong synthetic opiod with a very long half-life anywhere from 12 to 24hrs. But it has a long onset. Once it takes effect on opiate receptors it basically dominates them almost completely untill it wears off. So if you take any other opiates while it's in affect, you're not able to feel them because your receptors are full. The Naloxone, which is the same as what's in Narcan, seizes the effect opiates have with in a matter of minutes. But it only has a very short term effect lasting only 30mins. To an hour. Suboxone works by combining the two so that right after taking it the Naloxone prevents you from being able to do anything else and by the time it wears off the Buprenorphine has had time to take effect giving you the relief that it does. The Naloxone will cause you to feel withdrawal symptoms immediately but that's only if you take a Sub while still under the effect of other opiates. If you take others after the Naloxone has worn off you won't feel withdrawls but won't feel anything until the Buprenorphine has worn off. Hope this helps. As far as splitting a strip or tablet in two it works just as well with no problems. IIwas trying to keep it short, anyways, that's it.

Hello, Nickels! How are you?

About 72 hours, due to the Naloxone in the Suboxone, it takes that long for it to stop blocking other opiates.

The FDA classifies this medication as an opiate, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?
