Grey's Ointment
Updated8 Replies
There was an ointment that my mother would use when we would get a cut or blister or anything that might get infected. This was before antibiotics or antibacterial. It was coal black and smelled slightly of tar or sulphur. She would apply the ointment and bandage the cut and leave for a few days. When the bandage was removed the skin would be healed and looked white for awhile but there would be no scarring or discoloration. Do you know what this was and if so is it available today. I would love to have it as I am sensitive to antibiotics.
An old-fashioned remedy for deep wounds that must heal from the inside out is:
Clean wound with hydrogen peroxide.
Pack wound with dry grated raw sugar.
Cover with air-tight tape.
Do not disturb for 5 days.
Repeat treatment until healed.
It works because the sugar is converted to alcohol in the wound. The tape keeps scab from forming, allowing wound heal from deep to surface, and keeps out contamination. Learned from my Doctor in Colombia for a deep abdominal surgery wound that would not heal. Used many times afterward successfully for first aid and deep skin cancer surgeries.
There are still many ointments on the market that contain Ichthammol. You can find them in most drug stores, or other health stores. Though the U.S. FDA does warn that it may cause skin irritation in some people that use it.
There is, however, no evidence that raw sugar will help heal a wound, but I am not a doctor, so there may be things I do not know.
How many times has it worked for you Felicia? I am curious and would love to learn more about this.
Smile's PRID - It's a homeopathic all natural drawing salve. Comes in a flat round orange tin. Can be purchased at Wal-Mart.
Re: Mandy (# 1)
It is what I am looking for. It is called Greys or Grays Ointment. I don’t recall it being a dark colour though. It was a yellow colour. If we had a splinter or anything that was too deep to get out my grandmother would put it on an put a bandaid on and leave it a few days. When she took it off the splinter would be on the band-aid. She always called it a drawing-save! I got it last time at CVS Pharmacy! I am hoping they still have it! Hope that helps.
Re: Verwon (# 4)
As an office nurse, several years ago, I worked with a doctor who would have me mix up betadine ointment, betadine solution and white sugar. We treated decubitus ulcers (bed sores) with this mixture....great results.
Re: Mandy (# 1)
I remember the ointment exactly as you described! I've found something similar at a local feed store. Thanks for a good topic, and all of your for your advice! I'm going to research and see where else I can find it.
