Visited my Orthopedist and he prescribed Gabapentin as a multiple solution for differing pain. First have no cartaledge in left knee and only 50% in right knee with significant degradation of the joints bilaterally. Also having neuropathic pain in legs after sitting for 20-40 minutes in one place along with feeling of feet and legs being asleep(attributed to my diabetes) Also have shoulder pain from pinched nerve in my arms/elbows. Have been taking 325mg hydrocodone 4 times a day along with occasional extrastrength tylenol caplets to up pain relief. Took first dose of Gabapentin 250mg/5ml oral solution this morning.

Now for questions what sort of pain relief joint wise in my knee can I expect. On a bad day aka rainy and or cold knee waivers between 9-11.5 on a scale of 1-10 Right knee is stable at about a 4.5. Shoulders constant achy pain of about 5 on 1-10 scale. I am barely able to hobble to and from bedroom to kitchen without stopping to sit on my walker/movable bench due to pain on bad days. 15 minutes in Grocery store shopping leaves me with knee and lower leg pain in left leg of about 12.5 when I flex it to get back into car. Literally takes my breath away. Any comments about this drug in regards to treating my arthritic pain appreciated.

Hello, Laz! How are you?

Gabapentin doesn't work like traditional pain relievers, such as the Hydrocodone you were taking.

It is listed by the FDA as an anticonvulsant that is also approved to treat some types of nerve pain and certain mood disorders. Thus, it's also going to take a month, or so, before it will reach its full level of efficacy in your body, to see if it will help you. But, if some of your pain isn't related to nerve damage, it most likely won't help.

Its typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, mood swings and weight changes.

And in light of that information, I really can't make a guess as to how much it may help your pain, the only way to know is by trying it.

Are there any other questions or concerns?
