Hi Bev, Sorry to hear about the Gabapentin not working as intented. But I wouldn't stop taking it without talking to your doctor first. According to NIH.gov, if you were to suddenly stop taking it, you may experience withdrawal symptoms (such as anxiety, insomnia, pain, nausea, sweating, etc.) as a result of not tapering. For these reasons it's probably best to work with your doctor on gradually decreasing the dose over an allotted period of time (NIH recommends at least a week).
I hope this helps!
David thank you for your input but I already stopped the medicine and today it did hit me I feel horrible. I went to bed for awhile I had to take one of my.05 of Zanac. But I really don't want to restart the Meds to many side effects I may call Dr. Monday I have no energy and very depressed anyway thank you my be my age
Bev,
I wish more doctors would be upfront with patients about the possibility of withdrawal symptoms, since it can be so taxing on the mind and body. But if I could make any type of suggestion in that regard (at least in so far as what I would do myself), it would be to provide the body with plenty of nutrients via diet and/or supplements to help restore energy and vitality.
Ashwaghanda is something I take occasionally for insomnia and find it to be very beneficial for that sense of well-being and feeling grounded. Ginseng, black tea, and "green drinks" are some other things I consume regularly for mental stimulation and physical energy.
I don't know what's right for you based on what you may be going through, but perhaps you can speak with an herbalist or health consultant about other "low-risk" options for increasing energy and lifting depression.
On a side note: Have you considered trying medical cannabis for managing depression / nerve pain? My mom has nerve damage from degenerative disc disease and finds that CBD/THC helps her rely less on Lyrica (a.k.a gabapentin's close relative). I find the following study on cannabis' neuroprotective effects to be quite interesting to say the least: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10863546
Iv been taking 200mg of Gabapentin 3x a day seance 4/16 and want to stop it. How foo wean of fit and will I have withdraws ?
100mg is the lowest starting dose for Gabapentin and people only take this low dose to get them started before it goes up after a few weeks if the drug suits them. Gabapentin is tricky on elderly patients; you can see this in the medication leaflet that comes with the box of capsules - or the chemist should give you a leaflet if they decant the caps into a bottle. Elderly people can suffer bad side effects - that's why they're given a low dose. I doubt that 100mg taken for a short time would give you severe withdrawl symptoms - people only get these after being on a high dose for a long time. But obviously Gabapentin is not the drug for you - perhaps one of the similar drugs used for nerve pain would be better. Good luck.
