I'm looking for a doctor as well. We live in the Ontario, CA area. We have kp HMO and when I asked my doctor if she could give me a prescription, she said she couldn't. But, that what she could do was to refer me for counseling/group to show me what I should be eating. That's NOT what I need! I need something to help me curve my appetite.

In the U.S. any doctor can prescribe it, but you may be referred to a specialist, if you have a weight problem. Medications, such as Belviq, are not appropriate for everyone. It is also used as an adjunct to a reduced calorie diet and exercise plan. It also requires that your BMI exceeds a certain number, plus other risk factors are also taken into consideration, such as diabetes and hypertension.

Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, priapism in men, euphoria and decrease in heart rate.

Kd, I'm sorry, but I am not sure what the prescribing regulations are in Canada. Do you have any health conditions? Are you on any other medications?

I don't live in Canada. I should've spelled California out. Health issues? Some. I was diagnosed with a condition called DCIS of the left breast, which is a precancerous condition, but I don't have cancer. I'm about 50 to 60 lbs., overweight or at least that's what I would like to lose and I'm in my 60s. Thank you so much for responding. -Kd

P.S. I'm not on any required medication, which means that once in a while I'll take NSAID for arthritis.

Whether or not you can get a doctor to prescribe it actually depends on how far overweight you are for you age and height. It's only approved to be used in people whose BMI exceeds 27kg/m2.

Does anyone know any doctors that have been prescribing it?
