I had laser surgery on my face last Friday 6/12/15 I was prescribed to take acyclovir 3 days prior to treatment & then started doxy cycl 100 mg I also take 175 much of synthroid. I started noticing like heart fluttering or palpitations even thought it was heart burn. Went to the clinic mon night & had an EKG & everything checked out. Not sure if I'm having a reaction to the prescriptions. I'm having anxiety could hardly sleep last night. Any suggestions?

By a process of elimination the issue turned out to be with my thyroid medication.
My endo had raised the dosage & once it was lowered the issues have gone away.
It took me a couple of weeks for the dosage to be lowered in my system. All good now.
Thanks for the reply. Whatever it is has subsided still occurring less as the days go by. I wasn't sure if it could be linked to the Synthroid because I have been taking the higher dose for 2 mos now & when the dosage was increased I had an appointment with my endo 30 days after the increase in dosage he did this because I wasn't losing weight & his first question was am I having any palpitations. Not sure how long I would have to be on the higher dose to cause the palpitations?
Hello, Nancy! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem you've had.
It's difficult to determine which medication may have caused the palpitations, that's a possible side effect of most that are on the market, as listed by the FDA.
However, if the EKG didn't show any reason to worry and your doctor isn't concerned, then they are harmless. It's really just becoming aware of your heartbeat, when you usually aren't. If they last a long time, or are accompanied by other symptoms, then it would concerning and should be checked out by a medical professional.
The FDA classifies Doxycycline as an antibiotic and lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
Acyclovir is an antiviral that is most commonly used to prevent recurrence of the herpes virus. Its typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, flatulence and insomnia.
Synthroid is used to treat thyroid disorders and its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, weight changes, headache, dry mouth and hair loss.
If I had to guess at a culprit, this last one would be it, because it is well known to cause palpitations in some people that take it.
Is there anything else I can help with?
