I've been on pain meds for years my doctor is gone now and I'm having trouble finding a new one to prescribe my pills

Due to the new regulations that were put in place last year, you'll need to see a specialist for pain management.

But you really can't call doctors and ask them about prescribing any particular medications, because they are taught to view that as being drug seeking behavior and most will just tell you no. You need to see a new doctor, make sure they get a full copy of your medical records and proceed from there, without asking about them prescribing anything ahead of time.

Do you currently have a PCP that could refer you to someone? If so, that might be the easiest and quickest way to find the help you need.

Can anyone recommend a good doctor in that area?

I don't understand why some replying on this board is saying that PCP's (primary care physicians/or "providers" in NY State CANNOT prescribe narcotic medications...this is not true; many do, but many do not want to take the chance of being "stormed" by the overreaching DEA. Where are you getting this (mis)information? There is no law restricting any doctor/provider with a DEA license to prescribe scheduled medications and most PCP's have this license. There are "guidelines" only for doctors to consider under certain circumstances which they determine according to their own particular medical opinion, diagnoses, etc. Unless something has changed in the last month, this is what I have researched. Of course, I guess the "powers that be" might have sneaked something in; I wouldn't put past some of these people!

I'm a former RN who was injured after performing the physical and mental demands of years of floor nursing and if my current Workers' Comp. carriers who have covered my medical expenses for well over a decade had any problem with the Schedule II medications I am currently prescribed by my (recently retired) PCP for my particular diagnoses, then they most certainly would not pay for them, believe me! But, they DO. So far, at least. But suddenly, it's my current PCP I have to worry about in the same practice, not a private one with a few providers, but doctors/providers employed by a major regional hospital, unfortunately.

It is obvious to me and many thousands of chronic pain patients across this country that it is the doctors' and other medical providers' fear, the ever-increasing and required paperwork and expense of the hours involved preparing and submitting all these government regulations regarding these medications! Some of this information is located on NYS government website. See FDA website--in 2013 they withdrew many of the proposed "guidelines" for the ridiculous "PROP" movement by a bunch of "doctors," etal. who want to open or have opened up expensive, and very lucrative REHAB CENTERS which would have been in greater demand (because of Obamacare which includes rehab services!) had the FDA given them what they wanted! What a very convenient "proposition" this was: They wanted the FDA to approve some "guidelines" just have doctors force pain patients off effective, safe opioids and into the money-grubbing arms of their new businesses treating "addiction." The saying "follow the money" seems to apply in this case and likely, elsewhere! Fear and/or greed seems to guide the medical profession today, we already know the government "incentives." HOWEVER, due to SENSIBLE, caring, professional physicians, etc. citing FACTS/backed up by ACTUAL RESEARCH submitted to the FDA with petitions along with other statements/petitions from thousands of patients, the FDA TOSSED OUT AND WITHDREW THEIR FORMER STANCE formerly included this "PROP" bs and the biased and ridiculous proposed "guidelines" which included very unreasonable and restrictive limits as to length of time (90 days) opiates could be prescribed for non-acute pain, and also,the proposed "limit" to only prescribe all other opioid/opiate medicines according to "Morphine equivalent" dosages, etc. At least suffering American patients got some consideration!!! Please research on this topic available on the FDA web and NY State gov. sites, etc.

Unfortunately, the sad and sorry fact is, however, again, that PCP's, and now even many of the "experts"/physicians specializing in pain management to whom many pcp's now eagerly wish to refer all chronic pain patients because they no longer want to prescribe ANY opioids, etc. as they are afraid of raids by the government, which are few and far between now anyway. So, the rest of us suffer for the illegitimate recreational abuse, drug dealers getting in on the "act" thanks to the media hoopla and greedy pill mill doctors!

I believe that doctors and all of the medical and allied health community that, if they will not stand up for their patients, should at least stand up for themselves to end this clear overreach by our government(s) and take back their profession! What good are they if they do not want to treat pain? This is the number one reason people will initially go to their PCP's! This whole thing is a mess created by the DEA/DOJ to protect jobs at the DEA as they were in jeopardy of losing their funding from Congress years ago as they were losing the "war on drugs" as far as illicit, street drugs, i.e. Schedule I's, etc. So, they decided with, I believe, with the DOJ, and picked on the "lowest hanging fruit" from the "tree," and took the easy way.. with the A LOT of help from the mainstream media (now, seemingly in the pocket of government instead of being the watchdog of the government to protect the "people" of America, as "freedom of the press" was given Constitutional protection as they were intended to be!) in the early 2000's by practically advertising to those who like getting "high" with the hype about Oxycontin, and guess what happened? Increased usage by these people, not legitimate patients, who found a new way to have some fun; I never heard of this dangerous, evil Oxycontin media blitz/dangerous until the media "informed" me! And, after being prescribed this medication started to feel the "stigma" like a darned criminal and some kind of low-life! So, again, to justify this agency, the DEA's very existence and "prove" to Congress they should continue funding them, with the media's help, created a "need" to now go after legal prescription drugs the "easier way," targeting doctors and pharmacists with assets they can take away/freeze accounts, etc. And, by the time most of these doctors and pharmacists are wrongfully accused and acquitted, their practices are shot to hell. So, now people who cannot get their pain medications are going "into the streets" to ease their pain with those more dangerous illicit drugs. The DEA has lost both "wars," ya think???? They have defeated the whole purpose this agency was formed in the first place! Or are they just worried about others "diverting" these medications, as it sure doesn't seem they care anything about American's health and who need this type of medication to have some kind of quality of life!

The result of this "vicious cycle" they have created surely benefits the DEA and "others" but, to the detriment of all Americans, and with aging of the "baby boomers," a large chunk of this country, it will get worse if something is not done. This has to stop and stop soon.

Sorry, I cannot help with names of any specific pain doctors as I do not know of any, only those who give those expensive epidurals, which can cause serious and life-threatening complications and may not really work for long, if at all for many patients. You are not alone! In my own case, I'm getting some "bad vibes" as my own "new" pcp is acting "funny" as my former doctor in the same clinic (most all doctors are with hospitals/clinics instead of private practice) after 8 years of no problems (and I'm on a pretty low dose, considering what I know other people have been prescribed!) and she recently retired,and suddenly this low amount I was told was "excessive" by the new doc who took her place! Have I been "overprescribed" all these years by this same clinic? A big, invisible, elephant is in the exam room now with a DEA badge! Good grief, I have never increased this low dose, never requested a refill early (many times, requested refills AFTER the due date), passed all U/A's, already gone through two cycles of physical therapy and doing what I am capable with my restrictions, I now do at home with the approval of my former doctor! Done everything required! But just recently I am being prescribed, once again, and at great expense of my insurance carriers and my time, more physical therapy plus, instead of seeing my doctor every 6 months, now I have to go every 90 days/3 months! It's not funny, but those of us in moderate to severe pain are the ones who have to travel more, back and forth and go through continual humiliation and put under totally unwarranted suspicion!

Wish these chicken asses would just tell the truth and say to us:.."We are too afraid of Uncle Sam and will not fight back to save our own profession!" And, we taxpayers/patients are paying those nice government salaries, "cadillac" benefits and guaranteed pensions all to make us suffer! This horrid mess affects our quality of life, for the rest of our lives! So, so very sick of the stigma and the "hoops" we must jump through, the loss of trust and the breaking of a bond most sacred to most people---that doctor-patient relationship which is being destroyed. What we have now are doctors and other "providers" put into a position to choose between either their careers/licenses or their patients, and, unfortunately, most have chosen the former...a very, sad state of affairs indeed. America: home of the free? How about some brave doctors out there? Stand up or we all lose!
