Doctors Who Will Prescribe Pain Medication Between Shreveport And Lafayette, Louisiana

Updated

My husband and I are looking for a new pain management doctor, because the one we go to in Lake Charles, LA seems intent on bleeding us for every penny we have and threatening to not make us appointments for the following month if we don't pay the amount that they tell us we need to pay. My husband is disabled, but is still waiting for his SSI to be approved. In 2008, he was driving a log truck with an unloaded trailer and he was hit head on by a pickup truck. Point of impact was shown to my husband by the Trooper that was there, and it was on my husband's side of the road on the white line. He was trying to ditch the truck instead of get hit, but the guy whipped over too fast for my husband to get to the ditch. This was on a 2 lane blacktop road. The front tire and the tank with the step on the driver's side of the Mack was ripped completely off. The seats are air ride, so when you lift up the seat goes up. My husband was flung up and hit his head on the top of the cab (which compressed his spine and herniated several discs in his neck and back, and as Doc said 'busted' one of them) he was knocked out. The seat had lifted and not went back down so his legs were stuck between the seat and steering wheel and when he came to he was looking at the heater box under the dash of the passenger side with his butt still in the driver's seat. He has had two neck surgeries already, and according to his x-rays, one of the alographs that they put in did not grow like it should. He had to have the 2nd surgery because in the 1st one they replaced only the 'busted' disc and used a piece of metal to fuse C4 & C5 together, it grew too much and caused more problems for the herniated discs above and below. So in the 2nd surgery they took that out and replaced it and the one above and below. So he now has 3 fused discs in his neck. All but C1 are herniated, T4-T11(i think) are herniated and deteriorating (the bones are actually > shaped now), L2-L9 are F'ed up too. He's not even 40 yet and he gets my 79 year old grandpaw gets around better than my husband. (In case you were wondering, the guy in the pickup died on impact and the truck burnt with him inside)

About 9 years ago I was rear ended while at a dead stop by an elderly woman driving a full size pickup truck doing about 25mph. I was angled a little at the stop sign, turning right, looking left at the traffic and waiting for a car to pass before I took off. I had my left hand on the steering wheel and my right on my shifter(standard) when she hit me. I have been told by my physical therapist and my orthopedic surgeon that my shoulder can not be fixed. I have torn ligaments, muscles, and nerve damage and my spine deviates to the right slightly right between my shoulder blades. (which puts constant pressure on the soft tissue in the left side) I've also had orthoscopic surgery on one of my knees because of torn cartiledge. I have done acrobats and gymnastics since I was about 3. I had to quit during pregnancy of course, but I started again as soon as I could after my son was born, he was 5 when I was in my wreck. I have alot of problems with my knees, back, ankles, and wrists. I actually have bones in my wrists that are on top of other bones because they have been displaced and I can feel the holes where they should be. Both my hands go numb quite often, I can't feel the temp of water unless it is very hot or very cold. My orthopedic told me that one of the bones in my left wrist was cutting off the blood flow to one of the other bones just below my thumb and that that bone would eventually die and I have little choice but to let it die and then he could remove it, but not until and then I'd have limited movement of that thumb. I have fibromyalgia, and very bad anxiety complicated by panic attacks.

The Pain Management Doctor we go to now has us both on Norco (him 10/325, me 7.5/325) and Flexeril, but he also prescribes me my Xanax, Prozac, and Gabapentin. The Doc who was prescribing these three retired, and I haven't found another who will. We need to find a different PM doctor to go to that will provide these medications in the same amounts that we get now. We don't have insurance yet, so this doctor is just draining all of our savings, and we don't know when my husband is going to start getting his SSI. Can anyone help with a name for someone who doesn't have a 6 month waiting list?

Hello, Lynn! How are you? I'm very sorry about everything that you and your husband have been through.

However, all doctors are going to want to be paid and specialists are never cheap. I understand how frustrating it is, because I don't have coverage and have medical problems, myself. Thus, I do empathize, but it's just not realistic to expect find a cheaper specialist, or one that won't expect payment upon your office visit.

Additionally, most are not going to want to handle your Xanax and Prozac, in addition to your pain medications. Many are going to send you a psychiatrist to have those medications prescribed, since the Xanax is a benzodiazepine that carries the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache and irritability.

Until your husband gets approved for his SSI, have you tried seeing if you qualify for Medicaid? Even if you don't, they may be able to suggest programs that could help you.

Norco is a narcotic analgesic that also carries the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation.

Can anyone suggest a good doctor in that area that has good prices?

Another idea would be to check out the new insurance websites and see if they offer a cheaper alternative. Paying a premium each month could be less of a drain on your savings than paying for the appointments.

In Louisiana Medicaid, which comes with SSI will not pay for a Pain Management Dr or Clinic. If you can get another type of dr to prescribe the pain meds, they will usually pay for that. But, no Pain Management Dr or Clinics in Louisiana will accept Medicaid. You will also have to be sure that the Medicaid Health Plan your husband chooses if he is approved, has the dr you go to in their network. Very few private specialists or PCP's accept Medicaid in Louisiana. Usually you have to go to one of the state hospitals or clinics. It can also be very difficult to get any Medicaid dr to prescribe pain meds for chronic pain in Louisiana.

Hi Lynn, I'm very sorry for the pain and suffering the 2 of yal are enduring. I'm also disabled and understand the horrific hardship it is! I know of a very good dr in Orange, TX that is great and sympathetic. And he does write meds for pain, etc. His name is Dr Pomonis. Reasonably priced also. Renee I am near by (Port Arthur) and if you've read my posts have had to have specialized help due to my complexity. I have to have medications such as patches and instant liquid due to my P450 defect which means I metabolize opioids too fast etc. Is this physician willing to take cases that are complex?

Lynn I need a physician very soon too also in Texas or Louisiana. If it's just billing and he does what you need (treat pain) perhaps speak to him. There are multiple doctors in the area as you are aware.

Lynn, if you want to come to the Metairie area, I just posted some PM docs titled "Doctors who will prescribe heavy pain meds in Louisiana". I can't help you with PM's in other areas. So if you are willing to travel you can check them out.

Thanks for your concern BL. I was high and dry here in Metairie. Just trying to make a move and it's a challenge with the knee surgery and packing. Just doing it a little at a time and not overdoing it. How did you make out?

Paul, Blessed to not being in the flooded areas. Doing what we can to help those that are.

I moved a while back. I can't lift or carry anything that is heavy. I packed things in small boxes and put those boxes in large boxes that my grown children moved. Putting things in small boxes and them putting the small boxs in large boxes sound silly, but I was able to get almost everything packed by myself. Unpacking was also easy. Be sure and write on the outside of the boxes what is in them and what room they go in. Good Luck in your New Home.

BL, I am actually giving things away so I don't have to move them. I gave my sofa, bed and dinette set away to help people with the flood. Now I am trying to unpack things because I packed meds that I shouldn't have packed. So now I am spending time undoing what I did. I got a small apartment here and things are just scattered around so just doing the best i can do.LOL!

Does anyone know of a Dr in North LA? My fiance is on Medicaid. He was in a wreck 2 years ago and has since rebroken his ankle. He has a broken screw, which can be seen protruding. The talus is in 3 pieces and has avascular necrosis. His L-spine is broken in 2 places. We was going to a local podiatrist/surgeon who was giving him pain meds for longer than he should have. He wanted to try every other option before surgery. My fiance is also overweight and the dr wanted him to lose weight. Everyone keeps saying go to pain management, but obviously he can't with medicaid. He went to dr fairbanks about a month ago and was told he needed to starve himself (which he can't do; he's severely anemic) to lose another 100lbs. The dr wouldn't let him or his mother talk. He won't treat more than one issue. BJ had to pick back or ankle. Then the dr told him he was going to help him by not giving him pain meds because he is too young to get addicted. He is 35. He's had many health issues and has been on and off of opioids for 15 years. He's been to every dr around Monroe that gave us any hope. He has got to have help or im afraid he'll lose his foot, have a stroke or nervous meltdown.

Jess, as you and your boyfriend know, Louisiana does not pay for a Pain Management Doctor. It is highly doubtful he will find another doctor that will prescribe him pain meds for his chronic pain. His only option is to pay for a Pain Management Doctor out of pocket which is very expensive every month or not have the pain meds.

Has your boyfriend looked into surgery to help him lose the weight ? Medicaid may or may not cover that. It is common for surgeons to only work on one issue at a time.

Re: Jess (# 19) Expand Referenced Message

Unless every single doctor is a totally mean, heartess bastard, there must be a good reason they all tefuse to write for opioids. What other options have they offered him? What treatments or procedures do they recommend, other than pain meds, as you have sought many opinions from many different doctors? Surely they dont all shrug their shoulders and say too bad, cant help you. Beleive me, they are doing him a favour by withholding opioid therapy, its a one way trip to dependence and hell, on top of all the other s*** he has to cope with in every day life. I know its soooo tempting and easy and simple, just pop the pills...but some things really are not worth the price you WILL pay down the track for enjoying a little blessed relief today. Injuries heal, time passes, people learn to cope with all manner of physical discomfort and challenges through a holistic approach to recovery. Pills are a dirty shortcut, and mask the pain signals telling you to slow down. They interfere with rehabilitation by blunting your body's feedback system and lets you overwork your injuries and that aint good in the longterm. Pills make us think we dont need to do any active rehab exercises as we feel just fine and carry on ignoring the injured parts coz they dont hurt nearly so much. Pain makes us cautious and mindfull for as long as necessary to heal and strengthen the injury back to functional state. Yes you could of course take a pill only now and then when things get too much, use them sparingly, but beleive me unless you have the self control of a Zen monk you wont be able to resist the temptation of a bottle of feelgood pills with endless refills in your hot little hand. Who wouldnt? You're only human, and humans dont always do what is good for us...thats why some temptatons are kept locked up tight by society's appointed gatekeepers. Our brains just like some stimuli way way too much to ever trust ourselves to self-regulate, or know what is good for us and what isnt. Just because it exists, and you could have it, that others do it, that its normal...doesnt mean you should pursue it.

Louisiana Medicaid will pay for medications prescribed by a Pain Management Doctor. Louisiana Medicaid does not pay for the cost of seeing a Pain Management Doctor.

Based on what you said. You have Medicare and Medicaid. That is different than Medicaid Only.
