Do You Gain Weight With Suboxone? (Page 7) (Top voted first)

Updated

Hi I'm just starting to research suboxone. I'm currently going to a methadone clinic every day and it is such a hassle. I have to get up every morning at 4am to be there in time to get to work the line is so long but that's beside my point, My real question is Do you gain weight with Suboxone? This is my third attempt at trying to get off of opiates by taking Methadone but every single time I start taking Methadone I gain 40 to 60 pounds within the first 4 months. Most people do, some don't I just happen to be one of them. I get so discouraged by the weight gain that I stop going to the Methadone clinic and then start using again. Sadly my mom died from using the same drug I used before treatment. I have 3 children and want to get my life together again but I just can't cope with the weight gain. Can anyone tell me if Suboxone has the same side affect? And also is there any difference between Suboxone & Suboxine? PLEASE HELP!!!

I split all of my pills between 1and 2MGs. YesterdayI took more thanI needed but I'm back on track today. I started tapering the 1st of the year from 8mg per day. I have been taking this crap for 4years . Im so disgusted w it I'm theheaviest and unhealthiest I've ever been.

Ya I know what you mean. I got down to 1mg and messed up the dose (took more) for several days. Started back yesterday on 1.5mg and will stay at that for a week. Then 1mg for another week, then .5mg for 1 more week then I,m done. If I hadn,t messed up I,d be off them right now.
Your tapering fast. I,ve jumped off subs before and its easier if you don,t rush it too much. I actually got that advise from a sub dr. and he was right.
Cat, I,ve never taken the tabs just the films but they do seem to make me gain a little more weight. I developed a sweet tooth while on subs which I don,t have when I,m not on them.

how were your withdrawal symptoms when you jumped off? i just have the yawns and my eyes are watering. very little energy but even when im taking a higher dose of sub i have no energy. i feel okay for now. been on 2 mgs since the first except for wed. i meet with a sub counselor on tues. i will take physical withdrawal over mental withdrawal anyday.

Didn,t sleep well for a few nights but I did get some sleep. Same thing with watery eyes, yawning, lack of energy. It does go away eventually.

Hey, so I'm from your neck of the woods and having the same issues, when I got in it I was about 122 lbs. my DOC was Percocet and nothing more... I have 3 kids and have never had any weight issues, always been a small girl. I've been on it for almost 2 months and am weighing in at 137 and pissed... I'm on 8mg. I plan to take no more then 4mgs a day from now on, I will spit it out if I have to, this weight gain crap was not discussed and even when I asked about it I was told NO by the doctor... Doc said he never heard of weight gain being a symptom... I find that my teeth are sensitive and I've gained weight... Not impressed and I'm going to do a massive drop and taper as of this am... No more then 4 mgs for a week, then 2, then 1mg (for a week each dose) and finally off... Planning a family vacation in March and refuse to be a Heffer on the beach... Nope. Not to mention I want off this s***.. Like handcuffs. As of Tuesday I can take home my scripts. I have never touched a thing since I started on subs and the doctor said I can have my take homes now... This is nuts and so disappointing, I should have just taken the w/d from the perks like a champ and been done with it...

My name is Ashley and I've been on suboxone for a little over 2 years and in that 2 years, I've gone from 130lbs to 173lbs. It's depressing because if I don't take it I feel like crap and taking it is making me fat. I'm only 5'2. I need help as well. I'm 28 years old and I with more now than did when I was pregnant with my son, who is almost 9 years old.

I jumped from 6mg to 1-2mg perday and lost 5 pounds. first 5 pounds ive lost since starting this s***. trust me...its the subs. once its completely out of your system, youll lose the weight. i plan on being done in 30 days. ive never felt so confident, despite what docs say, that subs have caused my weight gain. not everyone is the same and thats why some ppl dont gain weight and some ppl do. hang in there. whatever you need to do for your happiness is up to you, dont let anyone else tell you different.

Thank you for that response, I've been waiting to hear just that... I'm on 8mg and I'm going down to no more then 4 this week. Then next week, 2mg, then 1 then .5 then off... I'm going away in March and I want this to be behind me... This is nuts. I'm 5"7 have been 125-127 for years and suddenly 2 months after getting on this crap I'm almost 140.. Crazy.. My doc was only Percocet and I totally wasn't suffering from malnutrition. I don't buy that excuse, I've also read that suboxone slows the metabolism and causes hypothyroidism... Therefore ppl become over weight or just gain a substantial punt of weight, it has nothing to do with being inactive. I hve a total knee replacemt, full time job and three kids, I can feel each and every lb I gain cause of the leg, just more lbs of pressure... Always running around like a crazy person at work or with the kids, the only thing other then the weight gain that has changed in 2 months is the suboxone.. Ding ding ding... It ain't rocket science... If u think the suboxone is contributing to weight gain... Your right... IT IS.... Some may be ok with this, I am choosing to eliminate the problem and cut myself off...I am confident enough that I will never touch my doc again and well pass the dangerous stage.. Thanks so much for your post, I'll repost any results starting this week..

So how did the switch from methadone to sub go? How did u do it? Im curious because I want to get on suboxone for 30 to 45 days and then ween myself down until I am fully off. I have been on methadone for 8 years and my thinking is that coming off of Suboxonebest way would be a lot easier then withdrawing from methadone. If you have any thoughts please share. Also how did your weight gain or loss go? I'm curious as well because I have a lot of weight being on methadone. Thanks for sharing

Hey there, so the doc started me at 10mgs... I did it for about a month, switched to 8mg. Long story short I noticed the weight gain after about 30 days and got so frustrated... I also know that anyone taking opiates is more then likely not eating properly and therefore not nourishing their body and this keeping any weight off.. There is no question, suboxone makes u gain weight for sure, I started playing doctor and dropped to 2 mg.. I haven't gained anything since I dropped it down, I'm now skipping days at a time and sometimes I'll just take a crumb less then 1 mg... I feel better, have more energy and there is no weight increase.. Drop your dose, 12 is way to high and totally not necessary.. Get yourself right down... Honestly this isn't a long term drug unless u want it to be... I will be completely off it without a doubt in the next few days.. I'm over it... If u know that you are strong enough and have enough will power to stay away from the opiates... You'll be fine... This drug was a miracle to me and got me through the worst of the withdrawal.. However there is no need for me to carry on with it, I am confident that I won't get myself back into the same situation and I'll be clean for life.. The advice I can push on you in seriously reduce your dose, take control of it and take yourself down to the minimum dose... I felt a little shotty while I was drastically dropping the dose but I drank energy drinks and s*** to give me energy needed to get up and get through the day!!! It's so mental...

Hi Kt, I gained a little weight on subs but my job is very physical so I probably burn a lot of calories during the day. I have noticed that I,ve gotten a real sweet tooth while on subs. Normally I don,t crave sweets but now I do. I,m not really worried about it. It,s better then craving the pills all the time, thats for sure!

Hello Tracy,
From everything that I have read I really think that most people will gain weight on Methadone and Suboxone, there are a handful of people that are lucky and do not gain weight. I have been researching as much as I can to find a way off of Methadone. I am ready to be off of it though I just cannot go through the detox part, it will kill me and I also run a business and have 5 kids which makes it hard. At the moment I am researching Baclofen which #137 mentioned might help withdraw symptoms, I will let you know what I find. Any info on Baclofen for withdraw then please share. Back to talking about your recovery, If the detox part is what causes you the most pain when coming off the opiates. Then, I think it would be best for you to stay on either methadone or suboxone so you can get your life together for your family. You should not worry about coming off until you feel strong enough which from personal experience I think most people get the mind set of never wanting to use again in about 2-4 years of being on maintenance. In the meantime hopefully their will be something for methadone withdraw in the near future hopefully sooner, for my sake than later. I just want to live again! Please if anyone has any suggestions on how to get off of methadone then please share with me. For anyone who wants to suggest trying doing it on my own, forget about it! I could not get off of H because the withdraw for me, keep in mind everyone is different, was like really close to death. Anyway, thanks for listening and Tracy keep in touch to let me know how you are doing.
