Do You Gain Weight With Suboxone? (Page 6) (Top voted first)

Updated

Hi I'm just starting to research suboxone. I'm currently going to a methadone clinic every day and it is such a hassle. I have to get up every morning at 4am to be there in time to get to work the line is so long but that's beside my point, My real question is Do you gain weight with Suboxone? This is my third attempt at trying to get off of opiates by taking Methadone but every single time I start taking Methadone I gain 40 to 60 pounds within the first 4 months. Most people do, some don't I just happen to be one of them. I get so discouraged by the weight gain that I stop going to the Methadone clinic and then start using again. Sadly my mom died from using the same drug I used before treatment. I have 3 children and want to get my life together again but I just can't cope with the weight gain. Can anyone tell me if Suboxone has the same side affect? And also is there any difference between Suboxone & Suboxine? PLEASE HELP!!!

hello jsays,
I don't want to come off as being rude but the amount of weight u gained could be for other reasons....I have been on subs for a year now, eat anything I want, and don't gain any weight at all, if anything I have lost 27 pds since being on them, so maybe and this is only my opinion u need to have so blood work done to find out what is causing the weight gain, no disrespect for I haven't gained any weight off of this med and is has most definitely been a life saver...best of health to u

hello brittnay,
Who ever told u that subs get u high r not very well educated, I have been on them for over a yr...and although they work great, I don't get any high feeling etc..I just feel normal without the withdrawal of the garbage I was on...so don't let anyone make u think they get u high....this drug is awesome in the fact that it clears your brain receptors and gets them back to normal in time after all of the real opiates you or another have been using... trust me u won't regret getting your or another person's life back from opiates...opiates r the devil...good luck and good blees u..

I was taking a lot of painkillers and methadone for about 6 years. I started to take suboxen in January of 2012. So Ive been on it for about a year and a half. and Im just now starting to ween myself off of it. well lets just say Ive gained 50 pounds and I always was about 130 before I started taking the suboxen. Ive tried working out, everything, and nothing helps, I WANT TO BE THIN AGAIN. hopefully when I get off of it, the weight will just melt off.

Yes, some people do gain weight but you've had a history of problems with drugs in the past and as methadone puts weight on you too, Suboxone is probably a better choice. Your life is more important than weight. You do have to be on this drug for the rest of your life (at least you're not supposed to be), it's supposed to help you get off of drugs. So when you get off, continue to do things (I assume you exercise as you are so concerned about your weight and eat properly) you're already doing, and you'll lose the weight. Oh, and your life will not be dominated by drugs in the same way your mom's was. Good luck.

I have been on suboxone for close to 3 years and consider myself to be well informed. I wanted to know as much as I could about this drug since I found it to be a sort of Godsend compared to what the mess masquerading as my life was. I do not understand your post & find it a bit odd? This lady's post is over 5 years old and she talks about weight gain from methadone - she only inquired about suboxone as a possible replacement med she was considering. Your post almost reads as some off-center/off-kilter poetry or anagram/special vehicle with hidden message, due to repetition of word "causal". You said you are not a physician yet it reads in your comment as though u might be trying to?
I only know one person personally besides moi who takes suboxone from previous opiate addictions - never of us had gotten to H yet, though it was coming around the corner, I saw it in the distance. I see lots of comments about weight gain and am a little shocked, I've never heard of this in other suboxone related blogs, nor did either of my docs mention it. I think I gained a few pounds due to a weird sweet tooth I developed, but I tend to fluctuate 5-10 pounds here & there and currently am not overweight but sure as heck could use some toning. I've also never heard of it as a medication with weight loss in side effects list. Indirectly? Yes. This med is notorious for causing constipation and I was flying along nicely for well over a year when all of the sudden, I developed a severe gastro type thing, constipation was a big part of it, I wouldn't wish on anyone what I experienced for a few months March 2012-July 2012. I experienced a lot of night time nausea as well and as a result had a 21 lbs. weight loss and I looked like total dog crap and was harassed indirectly at work, innuendo of eating disorder - man that pissed me off, I love eating and it was upsetting to go to bed sick to stomach. I saw my old Gastro doc from my drinking days and of course he recommended upper/lower which revealed my Barrett's Esophagus diagnosed in 2003 was completely gone - which I attribute to quitting drinking 2006 to present day...MiraLax works wonders for me as long as I take it 3-4 times a week. In hindsight I could have used an enema. I experienced pain I hope to never know the likes of again. You know u have to go and are past the point of no return but it doesn't want to cooperate and it is large & solid/hard and if I were an older person I probably woulda had to call 9-1-1, oh Dear lord! I still love suboxone it saved my butt.
I do not like the film and miss the original tablet terribly. a year ago at this time I had almost 2 months extra supply from having been able to take less than prescribed. with the tablet I could take just one or half of one maybe 2 in earlier days...it was like subox was my antidepressant. I told my doc this and he laughed but he was glad to hear me say it. I told him I had no idea when I planned to start tapering off and he and the other partner doc have ever pressured me - oh the money LOL!
I needed to talk about subox I guess sorry for blathering about...my friend who told me about subox and I loved him for it...well he decided to go in other directions, he got tired of the monthly appointments (we each pay $25 a week they won't take our insurance.....DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS CIRCUMSTANCE? My Rx is covered however, thank God. $10 copay for the month supply.....but I was laid off July 1st and only got 2 months severance and no more insurance after 9/30! I am looking into prescription assistance stuff...I know the films run about $10 each, so needless to say, I can't afford an out of pocket expense of a baby Mortgage payment. Now I just scared myself. I better find something or I'll have to start tapering like, NOW??? Ugh, help.

I've been on suboxone for almost a year now and taking a couple a day. I am a 34 year old woman who was 170 pounds and at 5'9 the weight looked good on me, now I am 110 pounds and I look like a skeleton I hate it I can't stand it and I never thought suboxone was the cause til I read this forum. Now I'm pretty sure I wanna quit cuz I eat constantly trying to gain weight but I just keep losing someone please tell me how to gain weight on suboxone or how to quit using it because I am afraid of withdrawal cuz I got 2 little ones I have to care for and a pacemaker and have been having the worst stomach pain and nausea and constipation and everything I want off it this drug is worse than the hydros I was on what can I do?

LOST weight! Suboxone makes you lose weight, period, end of story. That doesn't mean you can't gain weight while taking it, but it wouldn't be caused by the Suboxone!

I absolutely hate it when I read that weight gain associated with methadone or subutext/suboxone is either due to eating more sugary foods or lifestyle changes ie. not running around anymore, only. I know that a lot of Drs also say that one of these have to be the reason as it wouldn't be the medication alone, however, I 100% think that the medication can cause weight gain. I have been the same weight my whole adult life no matter what. I weighed between 48-50 kg & was able to eat whatever I wanted. I have never been on a diet & never exercised. I was on subutext for approx 5 years with no weight gain at all but then had to swap over to methadone. Over about 6 months I put on 14kgs. My lifestyle & eating habits did not change at all. I also developed other side effects such as excessive sweating. I finally ended up reducing & swapping back over to suboxone. At this time I lost 6 kilos. Once I stabilised my weight increased once more & I put back on those 6 ks. I am slowly reducing off the Suboxone & hope to be off half way through next year. I hate the weight I have put on especially as weight is something previously I have never had to worry about but know once I am off these meds my weight will return to normal. I also know of another girl who put weight on with methadone & within 9 months of coming off had lost all the weight she had gained. My Dr has also taken the position that she can't tell you medically that either will cause you to gain weight however she won't say that they won't either...

PS. I also think the one thing I have learned over the years with all these meds is that we are all different & even though a lot of symptoms are the same for everyone, different symptoms can be more extreme for one person & some symptoms may not effect another so for you the weight gain might not even happen.. You really don't know!

I've been searching for someone who has gained weight on methadone like me, and has switched to suboxone.. it seems like people who gain weight on suboxone don't on methadone and vice-versa.

How long did u notice a weight loss on suboxone?

I have been on Suboxone for longer than I'd like to admit. I got on it not long after it came out and an still on it. I lost weight the first year or so but now I'm heavier than I've ever been in my whole life. Reasons my doctor said. After a while it makes it next to impossible to go to the bathroom, it just slows everything down inside of you.

I have been on suboxone for over 2y now after being addicted to percocets. My doctor started me on 24mg of suboxone which is a absolute ridiculous amount. (I was taking 5/325mg percs, nothing more. I've never even smoked pot) But at the time I was so scared of w/d I didn't ask questions. Now I am at 6mg, but I've only been taking 2-4mg because like you, I want off this stuff!!! it's made me gain weight/lethargic and that was the whole reason I got addicted to pain meds. While I realize this is a "miracle" drug for those who were using heavier drugs for longer periods of time, I wish I never would have started taking this because the w/d symptoms now are way worse and drag out longer than if quiting w/o suboxone. People please ask questions before going in suboxone and try and take the least amount possible for the least amount of time!

Hi was just curious if any of you have seen a difference with weight loss or weight gain when taking generic buprenorphine orange tablets.. i initially lost weight on suboxone from the brand name tabs.. now that they don't make those I was prescribed the film, but can't stand the taste all day in my mouth.. took my first generic orange 8mg/2mg tab today.. was wondering if any of you had experience with the differences between the two and weight loss. i am just 3 weeks off methadone and never gained more weight in my life from that stuff..
