I keep searching and STILL don¨t have a straight answer. I am currently on 30mg, 3 times a day of OXYCODONE (legally prescribed) for horrific back pain..... ¿WHAT is the difference between the 2, if any, besides the NAME? oxycodone AND oxycontin........ PLEASE help me out! thanks!

What state do you live in? I know a great pain management doctor in Orange County California. He is accommodating and very considerate.

Be very careful about how much you take and please don't up the strength. I had a hip replacement that went to Hell and I was on Oxycontin for over a year. It's nasty to have to wean off of. You already have pain, you don't even need addiction on top of that. Withdraw is the same as withdrawing from heroin. You will be sicker than you ever dreamed. It's like having a horrible flu for weeks and weeks. You should probably seek out a pain management specialist. Surgeons really can't handle the side effects and just want their patients to be as pain free as possible. That's a bad long term decision.

Oxycodone releases the full amount of mg into your system within 45-60min. Oxycontin release the mg over an 8 hour period, so if it is 30mg it is releasing almost 4mg per hour. Depending on your needs, and the severity of your pain, you will have to see what works best for you. Also depending on your insurance because Oxycontin does not have a generic, it can be quit expensive. Hope this helps.

Iam a 55 year old male I have a knee replacement and need the other one done I used to be an athelete and really abused my body badly my back has terrible arthritis and im on dialysis yes I know thats alot but thats my life I have gone through all the anti inflamatorys and all the pain management stuff and all the pain pills you can shake a stick at. Its a shame that I have to live my life on oxycodone but its the only thing that gives my any relief i take 4 30 mg a day and they only work a little while I wish there was something better if you know of anything please help oh yeah prayer works better than anything God bless you all

Oxycontin is(oxycodone hydrochloride) Controlled-release Tablets for Oral Administration, brand name for Purdue Pharmaceuticals patented drug. As far as I know, there is no generic for "time release Oxycontin" at this time (May 2013)
Percocet is a brand name of either 10 or 5mg Oxycodone mixed with Tylenol, it is instant release.
Oxycodone is available in 5 to 80mg tablets without Tylenol, Tylenol does increase the effectiveness slightly
In short, the difference in Oxycontin and Oxycodone is Oxcontin is sustained relaes, Oxycodone is instant release. Same basic drug

One response says get off them and be coherent. That's great if it works for him. I knows myself as others would be in too much daily pain. My pain medication is fentanyl patch 100, oxycodone 30g m release 2/8 hrs - 6/day and Diliadud 8 mg PM. Honestly when I'm in severe pain they really don't help. However I'm not addicted or incoherent either. If my Rx was late, which it has I suffer no withdrawal effects. That being said I couldn't imagine functioning daily by dropping all pain medication as the one reader stated. My only advice is be sure that you have a concerned yet cautious pain mgmt dr.

From what I am reading it sounds like the pain specialist you are going to is a drug dealer. There are some doctors that only have cash patients and will write them for large amounts of pain pills and whatever else they want solely on their cash payment and not based on true medical need. Due to a rare incurable disease I see a pain specialist that is very cautious, becuase of how addicting these medications are. I would highly recommend you not continue to see this doctor; from what you have said, it does not sound as if he has your best interests in mind. My husband saw one of these "pain specialists" after a motorcycle injury and ended up in rehab for a very serious addiction. You have been very smart for not taking all of the medications as prescribed, but you are paying a doctor to give you poor medical advice. Good luck and you should be very proud of yourself for realizing this doctor was very wrong!

OxyContin contains the narcotic ingredient in an extended release form the name OxyContin means oxycodone continuous release, you can also get oxycodone as an immediate release called oxycodone IR. the IR version comes in 5,10,15,20,&30 mg doses the extended release comes in 10,20,30,40,60,&80 mg doses. The extended release gives you the specified dose over a 12 hour period where the IR gives you the specified dose all at once. I take oxy 30's IR 5 times a day for a fractured spine and broken sacrum. I've been on it now for about 1 year. I used to take the OxyContin but it doesn't work as well for me. Also OxyContin is the brand name made by Purdue pharma. Hope this helps clarify your question

You should try Cymbalta. I had a plate and screws put in my neck and the pain was awful. They had me on Percocet. The Cymbalta works better than a pain pill for me. It took a month but it was worth it! Hope all works out for you.

wow...i would always agree not to be on meds at all..but when ur pain is so bad that it has u crying in fetal position, rolling on the bed and it doens't ever go away then I must disagree....I'd rather be dead then live with that pain..but since I don't want to kill myself and I have a disabled husband I need to care for then the next best choice is at least some kinda of pain management...even if my head is in some kind of a fog..but...if u control it is much as possible..don't take more then u really need...with Gods help u can still get through without feeling like a walking zombie.

i just got off fentanyl and hydrocodone and i feel much better i was so out of it i didnt know what i was doing and were i was most of the time. dont take fentanyl unless u want to be a vegttable. they switched me to 30 mg 3 times daily of oxycodone and cymbalta 60 mg a day i am feeling much better it took a month to get off the fentanyl and i am now use to the cymbalta which took a couplle weeks took half a dose first then full 60 same with oxycodone ir. the doctor told me and is correct the long acting pain meds are way more addittive and dumb you. alot of pain is in our heads and i have degenreative disc disease, siatticca in both legs, ostio arthritis, a buldging disc and fibromilagya and scolious and more so i am not in just a little pain but alot. and i am holding at a 3 most days not with meds i am on and i can think i am happy and i owe it to my doctor getting me off and myself wanting to be off the fentanyl.

i would rather have one 30 mg instant release oxycodone than three time release oxycodone time release are way over rated instant release are way better.i get by with two ir a day where i was having to take 3 time release a day.but its your choice thats just my opinion.be careful taking this med very addicting.

It's a great combo the xanax keeps the morning sickness down from the oxycodone, pot is also great and it's coming to a town [legally] near you very soon.
The key to a happy life is to find cool open minded people that know the true facts which is "since ALL doctors have been ordered to stop (prescribing drug cocktails) specifically Carisoprodol which was the major cause of the overdoses in the past.

Oxycontin is Oxycodone in its purity. Yes it is time released filtering through your body for 12hrs. apposed to the quick release of Oxycodone that filters through in 6hrs. and is mixed with Tylenol

Good for you Freddy, I had back surgery 3yrs ago and they started me taking 12 ocycodone 30mg a day & 2 oxycontin 30a day!! Over the course of time my husbandhrt his back and the norco he was getting wasn't helpful so I gave him some of mine & pretty soon we were both hooked about 3 weeks ago we decided enough was enough and have cut down to 45 mg a day each and next week we should be completely weened off!! We can both now think better and I'm not constipated all the time and we enjoy sex again!! The withdrawal is hell but its so worth not being on these meds, I would rather have a little pain and a life then no pain an no life worth living! Good luck to all of you on this horrible drug that steals your life away an GOD bless

I too have CRPS and other multiple pain issues. My pain specialist put in a Neurstimulator implant to try to help it but it only made things much worse. I'm in more pain than ever. Now they are talking about trying a Ketamine infusion which is an 8hour procedure done as an outpatient at the Hosp. They infuse the ketamine all day as they increase the dose and its supposed to get rid of the pain for awhile, they will redo it as needed. I'm not sure If I should do it or not, I'm afraid it will make things worse. I'm on 30 mg of each the OxyContin and oxycodone 3 times a day plus I take Sevella and Neurontin- 900mg - 3 times a day for the burning in my legs and arms and neck. I've been dealing with this pain for almost 25 years, I wish you lots of luck and prayers will b sent your way if you dam

if the ocyicodone you are taking is make you feel sick ,the does is likey to high .that will stop after you build up some tolorence but untill then that is dangerous ,sometimes layin down will help but you dont want to fall asleep because of breathing probablems that come with it also tolerence is a sign of addiction take hold .tell your DR exacaly the problem
