"dicyclomine 10 Mg"
UpdatedI have had intestinal gas for some time: asked my primary care doctor whether there was something simple I could take as I had read that over-the counter meds were not safe. He prescribed dicyclomine 10 mg nightly. The list of side effects sound daunting. What do you recommend? I am quite elderly.

Hello, Tomyris! How are you?
This isn't going to help with gas, as a matter of fact, in other countries, they combine it with an antiflatulent medication to present a medication that helps with more symptoms. This works as a smooth muscle relaxer for the intestines to treat intestinal hypermotility and IBS.
Unless you have some medical condition or are on medications that causes them to be contraindicated, over the counter products, such as Simethicone, are generally considered safe. It is even what's commonly prescribed by doctors to treat such issues.
Has your doctor said there was some reason you shouldn't take it?
As to the daunting list of side effects, that is actually true of all medications. The main concern, however, is that being elderly, you are much more prone to experiencing them more severely than your younger counterparts.
Thank you. Your remarks are helpful.
You are very welcome!
Are there any other questions or concerns?
Yes, actually. My doctor made dicyclomine sound so harmless that I didn't realize the serious side effects that appeared so quickly were the result of the med--until I looked at the list of side effects that came with the med. Stupid of me. I had taken only two but the effects still bedevil me. When I called my doctor he said I could go to the emergency room. Bah Humbug! Is there anything I can do to counter this d… medication?
Unfortunately, there isn't really much you can do, it's just going to take time.
How are you feeling, now?
DISCOURAGED BUT THANKFUL FOR YOUR HELP.
No need to feel so discouraged, time is often the best cure. Just take care of yourself and one day soon, you'll find that it's passed and you didn't even notice. :-)
