Dexilant Causing More Pain (Top voted first)
UpdatedIve been diagnosed with erosive gastritis. Before the diagnosis I was on prilosec 20 mg for 7 months. The acid went away but I was waking up in the middle of the night in excrutiating pain that felt like a heart attack. Doc put me on 60mg of dexilant and carafate 4 times a day. It worked the first 3 weeks to reduce the acid and pain but the lump in my throat won't go away and food feels like it won't digest. Now this past week, I feel acid in my throat again after 9 months and a scraping pain throughout the day. I've been on the new meds for 5 weeks. Does it sound like I need a different medication? I feel like in want to go back on the prilosec and continue the carafate.

What is your overall diet like?
That definitely contributes to the problem and if you're continuing to ingest a lot of highly acidic substances, then you're basically defeating the purpose of the medications.
In order for the condition to heal up, you need to stay away from anything extremely hot, anything spicy, anything with alcohol and caffeine for several months, in addition to taking the medications.
And have they run samples to see if you have H. Pylori?
If you do and aren't given an antibiotic to eradicate it, that could be another factor.
yes, i have done tons of research on diet and i am diligent with it.
i don't take any other medications other than what this doc has given me. (don't even like to take tylenol)
i have been on a bland diet for 9 months. no caffeine, no spicy foods, i can't eat any kind of fruit, and limited veggies.
i have eliminated dairy, soy and gluten. the only foods i can eat safely are potatoes, spinach, eggs, and avocado.
i've had to include Ensure to get enough nutrients.
i was negative for h pylori, i've also had an abdominal ultrasound everything in there and all looks fine. various blood tests and the only thing that is off is iron.
when i called my doc to let him know that the dexilant is making my acid worse and what should i do, he says, "i don't know"
so i asked, well how about i go back on the prilosec and continue the carafat? his response was, "ya do that and call me in 2 weeks"
i don't have the best of luck with doctors.
have you been tested for hashimoto's. need blood work for tpo and tgab.
this is an autoimmune disease associated with hypo/hyper thyroid.
conventional docs DO NOT TEST for these they only do TSH for hyperthyroid.
you will need to find an endocrinologist that will test you
hashimoto's is associated with low acid production
PPI will not help
